I am looking at this Mass Air Flow unit, and it looks to be the most restrictive part of my 1992 SC400 intake.... I have an extra and started experimenting, took off the mesh screen and the car ran like crap, thought about grinding out the insides then thought twice about it...This unit is very sensitive...Would love to open the flow and get a larger throttle body...Any known upgrades for this? Does switching to MAP have any advantages? Any uprgradeable newer SC model MAF's swaps that someone is aware of that work?

its definitely the most restrictive part but there isnt much to be done. since its a karman unit its very sensitive to almost any changes that are made. the screen is there to help linearize the airflow to get a more accurate reading. you shouldnt be outflowing it unless youre running forced induction though. remember with the intake at NA intake volumes its more a matter of streamlining airflow over increasing passage area since relative to FI cars, the intake air demand isnt very large.

 

THanks for the info, that is pretty much what I thought... I have tried altering and tinkering with the stock MAF and had no success......A very sensitive unit to change.....

Best flowing intake for an NA 1UZ...would be these little babies...Too bad they are not practical for street use...

on 1g 4G63 Turbo mitsubishi engine there was karman too. I swapeed it for vette MAF and maf translator. they do translators for anothers cars. even for supra mk3 turbo with is very similar to sc400. Now they have something that can change from karman not only to hot wire but for MAP too.

Yeah Jerry about a little more details. Are you saying the the Vette MAF and translator will wire directy in and work ? Or do you have to use a ECU to program it in to drive right ?

 

that was for my 4g63 turbo motor. that is 4 cylinder 2 litre car. engine by mitsubishi.
there is something called maf translator. you simple remove stock kaarmann maf and putting gm 3 or 3.5 or 4 inch hot wire maf and there is device thatn can by adjust as safc. so you will have no restriction (put 4" gm maf) and tunable device that alerting maf as safc. that device is calling TRANSLATOR. originally that was for buick community, next for mitsu and now it is availe for mk3 supra too.

that device is simple and it was work extemly well in my 4g63 turbo engine. maf cost about 100-150$ and translator $200. for 300-350 $ you have no restriction and safc in one.

Don't bother I already looked into it big time...You can have a dual MAF but that is mainly used with a twin turbo setups or you can switch to an MAP and that is about it....Not much more there to work with in regards to our stock MAF's.... ....

 

thanks for the heads up, my previous car had the same thing, pain in the ***. but i'm still going to make my attempt at a strong n/a setup, regardless. i'm trying to stay away from the huge costs of custom turbo/blower.
