Make sure to use the correct tranny fluid. The SC3 with 4 speed auto (non VVTi or ECTi) uses Dexron, not Type IV. Don't know which ones came in that model year.
Is this a Lexus dealership, or what kind of dealiership is this? If its not Lexus I'd honestly tell them that I want a Lexus dealership to at least look at it before repalcing the transmission, I'd even pay for it if it was $150 or less. Have them tell me what exactly is wrong and go from there. Replaceing the transmission seems a little much for something that a light on the dashboard created. Were you having any problems with the car shifting or anything?
I woulnd't get the Audi if you like the SC, you'll be kicking yourself in the end.
its an independent shop but the mechanic is a master mechanic for Lexus (ive seen the certificates in his wall)... so i believe him when he says i need a new tranny. i can't take the car now because the tranny is already out of the car. and the car ran fine except for that stupid light... all i know is that he replaced all the parts he said he would including the torque convertor... but i guess it was still giving him an engine code for the tranny. I don't know anymore... I just want my damn car back and for it to not give me anymore issues.
and why not the Audi??? i dont know too much about those cars, but would the maintenance costs be the same.

he said he will be using type IV... its a 97. the other guy on here also said to use type IV... now you're just confusing me............
well this is it guys... just under 1 month of me driving the taupe SC (and 4,200 miles later), my black one is finally done! I managed to convince the dealership to have the shop rebuild my original tranny using all lexus parts... YEAH!!!! so shes getting detailed and i see her tomorrow morning.... wish me luck!
get whichever one is the most mechanically sane. You can always get a paint job later on yes but Lexus paint is not cheap AT ALL! you could also just keep yours now and wait a little longer for another one to show up. Dont let the color be the deciding factor of the car 100% because you want a car thats enjoyable and safe for you to drive even if that requires the color to be different.
im so happy!!!!!!! now that i know which car i actually own, the modding can begin... she runs like a champ! 1 year full warranty on the entire tranny. isn't that beautiful!!!
Man, good luck with the tranny; I know it's a completely different car, but I had tranny issues with my ES and I learned 2 things; transmission shops are shady, and Lexuses are expensive to work on. I was so happy to get rid of that car, even though I loved it to death before it broke Oh, and I'd go easy on the mods with a wishy-washy tranny...not to mention it'll void your warranty
