Oh boy, years go by and zero issues and then this weird event
The drivers side mirror is loose on the post that it moves on. Ya know, like when you go into a car wash and the mirror housing moves toward the door and then you push it back forward to its default position after you dry off the car? Well, now it moves back and forth with ease. I gently raised the mirror body and saw the post it pivots on, so I think that a retaining screw of some kind has come loose, or???
Ya see, I have never had the mirror housing apart to know how the housing and post are retained together.
Any ideas on how best to seperate the mirror body or fix this issue?
First remove the mirror from the housing by gently prying at the bottom with a flat screwdriver. It will unsnap at the bottom and you lift to unhook it from the top. Disconnect the heater wire (if so equipped) and then you can now start digging into the housing.

Good luck!
Thanks for the idea on first the mirror, then work on the housing from the inside - Thanks! Now, I better not break it
You should be okay. I took mine apart like this when I painted the car. There's two snaps on the bottom so try to use something as wide as possible to apply even pressure to the bottom edge. Work slow and nothing should break.
Ok Lexers, The post regarding getting into the mirror shell was very correct and very easy. The reason why the body came loose from the post is that the retaining clip, above the washer and spring, which retains the body under tension to the pivot post, was gone AND the outer groove that helps retain it was folded inward and upward.
SO, the pivot post retention groove is gone. SO I rigged up a temp solution and put it back together. Everything will be fine until excess pressure is applied to the mirror housing, but it will last until that day.
In the meantime, I need to find a replacement mirror, without galss, or plastic - just the main internal mount and the wire harness that goes though it.
I guess it is time to go fishing for a used assembly -
