Default Annoying strange side mirror problem

This has been going on for years, and I'm finally just getting fed up with it.

My driver's side mirror acts as if, when completed folded out, it's too far out for normal use. Whatever is supposed to stop the mirror from folding out is allowing it to travel too far.

So, 2 questions - do I have to remove the entire door panel to replace the mirror if it comes to that, and, what do you think this could be?

I've searched and read everything on here and still stumped.

I think the stopper detent on the mirror swing motor assembly is broken, causing it to stop further out than designed. Only real way to fix it is to buy a new/used mirror assembly and replace it. This happens sometimes when the mirror is forced closed from impact to nearby cars or pedestrians.
