How is "Total Average" computed?

How is "Total Average" computed?
I'd like to test my understanding of the "Total Average" figure that's updated in real time on the display in front of the steering wheel. As I understand it, this is an actual calculation of miles driven per kWh. In other words, let's say I clear out the data and it starts at 0.0. If the car's computer then detects that I drive 2 miles while consuming 1 kWh, then the display will read 2.0. So, it's my understanding that the "Total Average" tells me exactly how my car is performing, with my own driving habits, my use of climate control, my highway gradients, my local weather, etc.
That's as opposed to it being an average of the guess-o-meter's wildly varying and often inaccurate estimates of future usage.
Am I right, or off base?
