Is it really needed and worth paying for?
- Inspect axle shaft boots
- Inspect steering linkage and boots
- Inspect ball joints and dust covers
- Inspect exhaust pipes and mountings
- Inspect body/chassis
- Inspect rack-and-pinion assembly
- Inspect brake lines and hoses
- Inspect engine coolant
- Inspect wiper blades
- Replace Smart Key battery
I don't think so.
I typically just do dealer service every 10k miles (oil change interval). Easy to remember and practical with the longevity of synthetic oils. This has worked fine for me for all of my vehicles over the years and never had any issues.
I think you could probably go to 15k mile service/oil change interval as well and be fine. But I stick with 10k, as that represents my annual driving and I think at least once per year is a good rule of thumb.
I think Lexus pays for the first 5k and 10k mile service to get customers in the habit of going to the dealer for service every 5k miles although I believe that to be overkill.
Some may disagree. Do what you are comfortable with. For me, life is too short to spend it at dealerships. (-:

I would say NONE of the dealer fictional service 15k, 30K etc are worth it. Notice how everything is INSPECT and only the fob battery will be replaced. They'll probably charge you a few hundred$ for that. You can change the battery yourself in about 60 seconds.Originally Posted by HeyThere

Any competent mechanic will look at those 'check' items when a car is on the lift. Whether they charge extra is suspect.
I know that many DEALER techs are encouraged to look over the car while oil is draining, to recommend extra future service (and generate $$$ for the dealer...)
We brought our previous Acura in for a recall, and they said we needed wiper blades, that were three weeks old...
Regards the FOB battery: That might be a good one to do yourself on a time basis. I know of too many friends who had the primary battery fail, then found that the secondary FOB was dead, too.
Our Lexus app schedule says to rotate the tires at 15K miles, too. Another suggestion that has been debated here.

This has worked for me for over a million miles with zero problems. I never go in and ask for the 15,000 or 20,000 mile service etc. every 10,000 miles I get the tires rotated and oil changed. Every 30,000 miles I get to brake fluid changed. That's it up until 105,000 miles. After every pollen season first of May, I change the cabin and air filters. Both take less than 5 minutes and cost 40 bucks for both.

yes, I just go to a very good independent guy and ask for what the service manual specifies. I NEVER ask for a 15k or 20k service....I know local Toyota dealers who, when you use those terms (and they try to push you into them) automatically charge you $250 for a basic oil change and checking lots of stuff. The service manual is very specific and I do what they ask to be done, nothing more. (my local guy charged me $46 total for the cabin and engine air filters)...Originally Posted by Freds430
