If you have the ML system, it brings out the worst in mp3s loaded on usb. My wife's RX has the base system so it sounds fine but my ES has the ML and the same flash drive in my car sounds horrendous.
We are using a USB drive with over 1,200 songs on it. It sounds great in my 2020 RX with the ML system. It sounds is as good as it sounded in the 2 ES cars with ML we have owned.
I wrote that because that's what it says in my manual. This morning, I did some experimentation,, and it turns out my car only recognizes mp3 and wma as music files. No aac and no flac.
My next experiment is to try to decide whether wma sounds better than mp3 on my ML audio. With 70-year old ears .....
I have the ML and it sounds great! I normally use AAC as the codec since it is much better than MP3 for the same bit rate. I typically encode at 256kbps AAC.
The system does load much quicker using USB Drive. I then wanted to play a journey song so I thought let me just scoll down the list. My system starts at A and as I am.scrolling through the Bs my sound system drops. That's why USB loads so quickly it's not a complete loading of the library.i also noticed once the library loads up it is not uncommon for the library to just drop all their just loaded library to load again. Because searching beyond a loaded file causes a system failure. I drove bmw, Porsche's and never ever had these issues
Folks with RX's starting in 2020 why not use the Carplay feature? I have about 100GB of music on my phone which consist of importing some CD's, digitized vinyl @256k along with itunes & amazon music downloads. The sound is pretty good except you can tell the difference in the vinyl which is a given. I made a phone playlist on my computer and synced the playlist. Am I missing something here beside just wanting to use an ipod that has some old music on it? I can understand that at least.

I do not want to plug in iPhone every time I drive. For me, it is just easier to use the USB drive I created with over 1,200 songs.. 😊
I stopped using my iPod in my car when I first purchased a car with Apple CarPlay (back in 2016). Before then, my iPod was my go-to source for music when driving. Still use my iPod when traveling by air (not recently, BTW) and when I am away from home (on the beach, for example). I find that headphones connected directly to the iPod give a much higher sound quality than Bluetooth headphones connected to my iPhone. To each, his own.
