Default What is this? Small storage unit? Something else?

The family has had this car for close to one and a half years now and we love it. I am gradually finding neat new small little details about it as time goes on. Just the other day, I had to use the cigarette lighter to charge something and couldn't help but notice the small compartment above it. It looks like the front hatch should open but I have pulled on it a little bit and it won't open. I certainly don't want to pull too hard and break it as the plastic seems a tad flimsy. I was just curious if anyone else has noticed this little thing and knows what it does. I have checked the owner's manual and it doesn't list it as one of the car's storage areas nor is it labeled in the schematics for the center console and climate control area. I appreciate any ideas you can shoot my way.

For reference: This is a 2018 RX 350 F Sport but I have seen this in other 4RXs prior to the 2020 refresh.

My curiosity can lead me a little astray for trivial things like this.

Oh neat! I always wondered where they went in the vehicle to get that done. It seems to be locked and there are two little sockets under the flap. I assume you need a special tool to get at those releases in order to open it? Thanks for the info.

The door flips up with just your finger and their is a SD card slot. As the other person said it is used to update the map software.

Maybe I need to try a little harder but mine won’t flip up very easily at all, not that I need to do anything with the SD card. Just curious busy fingers.

I was wrong, you just push down on that little lip on the door with your nail

After reading this thread, I got curious and googled "lexus map update". For a Gen 4 RX, the MSRP is $210. I think I can get by with the one I already have for awhile ....

The dealer should be able to update for free or a small fee if they even have an update. I stopped using it altogether and installed an Apple Carplay device. Now I can use Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze which all work great on our display. Here is the link to the one I purchased and installed if interested
