about doing the brakes without the scan tool.
If you park the car and place the transmission in drive, and then shut the ignition, the car can roll. Hence, the brakes are not locked! Chock the wheels to prevent rolling and remove the wheel to remove the brake pads. I have a fairly new rx350 so the need to do a brake job has not come up. When the time comes, I will try this method to see if it works. In the meantime, if someone does this method and it works, please let us all know
is it like this?

its not about the electronic brake being engaged or not - you can have your car in PARK and not have the electronic brake engaged..
it is about retracting the piston so that the new pad (which will be thicker) and the new rotor (which will be thicker) than the old worn components, will all fit back up together.

What is so different about this brake caliper that the brake piston cannot be retracted the usual way? Do you have any diagrams or photos showing the difference you mentioned?
here is a video of one example and explains it -
you can probably still turn the piston back but you need to do it with force and you run the chance of damaging the motor.
