I have a RX350 2010 with 98k miles and a 2001 Rx 300 with 198k miles. And two Toyota Corollas. Looking for a diagnostic code reader. Would like a nice one. what is the difference between a $20 and $100 one. There seems to be 100`s out there. Is it worth the extra money and what extra features are nice?. And no, i don't want to ask Autozone to use theirs i want my own. I do most of my own work but i was in a bind today and got ripped off on a simple VVT solenoid that cost me $360. Just one. Thanks for the advice.
I have the iCarsoft TYT V1.0 scanner. Ordered it from amazon in September 2019 for about $110. It reads the engine, transmission, ABS, SRS, and a few other modules. Have not had any operational issues with this 2015 RX350 yet (currently approaching 58,000 miles) so I do not yet know how valuable this scanner will turn out to be to me.
If you are Toyota centric, it might be better to get a techstream clone with vx cable package that many have mentioned in other threads on this forum... search for techstream with the search function.
Go to YouTube and Search "Scotty Kilmer Diagnostic Tool". This guy has been a mechanic since the stone age and does tons and tons of car repair videos. He's a bit of a crazy character but can be fun to watch and has some good info in between his stories. He's also a fan of Lexus and Toyota. He's done a bunch of videos on various scan tools over the years, so I think its worth the time to browse what he has to say about the different tools available.
Look up Blue Driver on amazon. I think they're under 100 CAD. It hooks on to an app on your phone via Bluetooth and tells you if there's any trouble codes, recently cleared codes, and streams live data.
Very beginner friendly if all you're looking for is codes. I have no regrets getting mine.
