Are there any recommended filters that can last as long as the oil change replacement schedule? What happens if I neglect it changing the air filter? Primarily looking into changing filters myself as the Toyota dealership usually wants around $75 for it.
Air filters easily last as long as or longer than 10,000 miles. In normal circumstances, most do not get changed until 15,000 miles. Almost any new air filter will be better than the old one. I have used Fram. Wal-mart exclusively sells an ultra premium Fram air filter. I used one and was impressed with the build quality. I have not had it long enough to know if it will really last that long or if I would keep it in there that long.
From FRAM: FRAM Ultra premium air filters provide up to 4 years or 40,000 miles of ultimate engine protection against dust, dirt and other damaging particles entering your engine. Air filters are your engine’s first line of defense. FRAM Ultra Air Filters trap and hold smaller dirt and dust particles not captured by traditional cellulose paper air filters. Ultra Air Filters are engineered to protect your engine against wear by trapping contaminants entering your vehicle’s engine. The blended multi-fiber filter media provides long term durability and greater filter integrity. Drivers benefit from increased horsepower and acceleration when air filters are replaced at OE recommended change intervals. Please follow recommended change intervals as outline in your vehicle owner’s manual.
Same with the cabin air filter, although half the time they get neglected. I have seen many friends' vehicles where the cabin air filters look like they had been in there since the car was new.
My source of information is the warranty service manual (thin booklet). Simply look it up and it will tell you when to replace the air filter (just as an example).
Every service is listed there based on time and milage. As an owner I can always choose to do extra but the recommended services should be done at minimum. Adverse driving conditions require some tweaking. As an example you can change air filter with every oil change, but it will be an overkill [IMHO]. On the other hand if you are constantly driving through dust clouds, it may be the right choice.
Now about parts. Once again at minimum the replacement parts need to be what came with the vehicle [performance]. If your research finds you a better part, look into price-performance factor. BUT changing the schedule to go beyond the recommended interval is a slippery slope. Do it only if you are willing to discover the outcome on your own.
It’s fine as long as you change it every 5 to 7k miles. Be sure to use synthetic oil also.
Are you sure we need to replace engine air filter every 5-7k miles? Maintenance book, if I am not mistaken, says to replace it every 30k miles. My dealer also replaces it only after 30k miles.
Oil filter needs to be replaced at every oil change.

I think he believed that the OP was asking about the engine oil filter, not the engine air filter.
He wanted to point out that cheap engine oil filters will not last 10k miles, you need a good synthetic oil filter for that.
You're right about the engine air filter, it needs to be changed every 30k miles, or if you drive in dusty environment than more often of course.
I live in The desert in New Mexico. It is VERY dusty. Air filters get real dirty fast. Plus I’m just over cautious and it doesn’t cost much for assurance.
