I thought front defogger is mostly to help with moisture on the INSIDE of windshield. For the outside - keep using the wipers as needed. I think, as temperature inside the vehicle (and the glass surface) stabilize and somewhat even out with the outside, the need for the wipers will diminish.

By any chance, is the air conditioning blowing on the windshield, by your settings or a problem with the A/C? Your windshield is getting cooled somehow, causing condensation to form on the outside, similar to the fog on the outside of your cold beverage glass in the summer. You don't say how long this problem persists or the age of your wipers. I remember this happening, very rarely in the past with other cars, in extremely humid conditions like fog in San Francisco.
Hope this helps.

The temperature difference between the outside and inside the cabin like everyone mentioned is probably the culprit. Cant say it's happened to me recently. I do use Rain-X on the windows, not sure how much that helps. It probably has more to do with being parked in a garage during the day. I'm not trying to cool a hot vehicle. Maybe try adjusting the temperature inside and put it in auto mode.

Like others have said, it's a temp and moisture difference between the night air and the inside of your cabin. Anita suggested Rain-X, I think it might make the difference and offer you some relief. I'm usually parked in the garage but occasionally if I'm at a neighbors house at night, mine does the same thing as soon as I crank up. A mile or so with the defroster on and it's fine. I probably need to try the Rain-X too .

Additional note: I can remember this happening all the way back to my teenage years (you probably weren't born then) when I started driving.

If it's raining and I have the recirc on, my windshield fogs up. Turn the recirc off and it clears up.

Oddly, cars are made so that the ac comes on for defrost. What really needs to happen is that the window gets warmer than the surrounding air.

Turn your temperature to hi temp until your window gets warmer than the air, then there will be no condensation.

Note, at first the window will get really foggy... But just for a moment. Keep it on hi temp and it will quickly turn okay.

There are two reasons to run the A/C in the defrost mode:
1. To remove water vapor from the air (dehumidify it)
2. To keep the A/C system seals lubricated during the winter months when the system would not otherwise be on

I've owned and rented cars for 40 years and NEVER had to deal with this fogging issue until the Lexus. I'm told by the dealer that the AC comes on to automatically remove moisture from inside the system. Okay I get that, but, why does it have to be vented onto the windshield where it has been proven over and over to annoy drivers? where do other vehicles vent their systems? its hard to believe that only lexus cars have this function built in.
thanks for listening.

This.. All the vehicles I have owned in the past have had MAJOR fogging issues if I had recirc on, especially in the winter. Turned off recirc and the fogging issues went away. I mostly noticed this on a 2003 WRX and 2005 Forester XT though.
