It's a small cast aluminum piece that fits over the filter housing and allows you to use a 15/16" socket to remove/replace the filter housing. Extremely difficult to do the job without the stupid wrench.

Or, you can go to Amazon and get the same wrench (AST TOY 640) for only $15.

For those who fear they will miss an oil change... when you buy your car (new or used), have the oil changed at the next 5k or 10K (you choose which). If you like 5k oil changes, change the oil at the first 5K interval (15,000, 20,000, 25,000, etc), even if it doesn't need it. After that, you will never need an idiot light, or a sticker on the windshield, to remind you. Odometer shows 40,000, time for an oil change....

There is no reason on Earth to do 3K oil changes, for at least the last 20 years. Either 5k or 10K, whichever you are happy with.

Default oil change interval light

Just had the oil changed and the shop reset the reminder light on my 2010 RX350. Now...when does that light go off again? Every....5k? 10k?
I looked all over the manual. Did not see it. Page number if its there?

5k. However the factory oil change interval is 10k. Lexus left the light to come on at 5 after they lengthened the oil change interval to 10k in order to improve dealer profits, thinking you would go there every 5k to have your tires rotated and then get sold a bunch of unnecessary additional maintenance and repair items.

Full synthetic can go 10K? SAE OW-20? That stuff is as thin as water looks like.

Did not know the factory changed it. Wonder why? Oil got better?

They changed it back in 2010 so they could claim lower maintenance costs and improved gas mileage. The superior chemistry of modern oils is supposed to allow this long an interval. Oil has become vastly better in the last 10 years. Most or all 0w20 is full synthetic.

Now there is even 0w16 https://www.api.org/products-and-ser...oil-categories

However the ES350 with virtually the same engine calls for 5w30.
Someone on the bobistheoilguy.com forum started mixing 4 quarts 0w20 with 2.5 quarts 0w40 to reduce the dreaded start up death rattle and improve protection. I ran that mix for the last 6 months and do think it reduced engine start up noise. I do not track gas mileage so cannot comment on that.
