Not sure what generation my ipod is but I got as a gift in 2004. For some reason, the navigation is unable to detect it. Any ideas?
Based on the number of posts you've put up so far, I'd recommend reading the owners manual.
As suggested, check on iTunes to see if there is a firmware update. A 5 year old iPod though is somewhat obsolete in the tech world... so it may not be supported.
Also, do a search for iPod on this board for the 2010RX. I wrote a few times about the way Apple changed the connectors from Firewire to USB. The RX uses the newer USB connection and older iPods can't connect.
Someone was going to try an adapter - I know they make one to go from a newer iPod to an older connection but I haven't seen an adapter that would make an older iPod connect to the newer connection.
Sorry, I'm in a rush but wanted to help. Definitely search and you'll see my much longer winded description ;o)
Yes, please make sure yours is one of ok models below.

Then, on the iPod, go to settings, about to find out which version you have. Not sure if this is standard on all iPods. It works on my 30GB video iPod. Or you can connect the iPod to your computer, bring up iTunes, and click on your iPod. Version will show up there too. Hope this helps.
Bummer. Might be time for a new one. You can get a used iPod in Apple's bigger stores for a discount. They're called refresh (noun, not verb). Some are brand spanking new but returned by a customer. Just check it out before you leave the store for scratches. Apple guarantees them same as new. Just a thought.
Well, I think that I have a gen 5 and it does work sort of. The problem is that when I turn the car off, about 80% of the time the ipod does not come back on properly and the player is not really seen by the audio system. The audio system thinks it is playing something but what it is, I don't know. I have to unplug the ipod at the usb connector and replug it. Then everything works again until I turn off the car. 20% of the time it does work. Doesn't seem to help if I pause the player first or if I turn off audio first. Has anyone seen this? Does anyone have a solution? Thanks.
How about updating the software on your iPod? You can do that though iTunes. Just plug it in and it should tell you if you need a firmware update. If it doesn't happen automatically, you can go to the help menu and it should walk you through it.
Thanks for the suggestion but the iPod is at current level. I update it when there is new code which has not happened in a long time for it. It is a couple of year old model now.
Having similar problem. iPod Nano with latest software was working, now nothing. The iPod knows it is connected. I tried a couple of different cables and also tried a Touch, same results. The audio system knows it has a USB device connected but when selected it says nothing found, check user manual....
