Default Headlamp Safety Concern Criticism

Hi fella's,

First, let me say, don't take this the wrong way. I see a lot of complainers out here, but this is really geared at helping out Lexus fix what I consider to be a design flaw for the next model year... And fyi, I'm awaiting the arrival of an RX.

Today I was driving around when it was almost dark and pass an RX350. I'm not sure of which version of headlamps it had on, but it was definitely HID's. Looks like the Bi-Xen version as best as I can tell from the blue-ish tint.

Anyways, the project len's was designed on the inside edge of the headlamp near the grille. When looking out the rear view mirror, it made the car look extremely skinny.

I am concerned at the number of drivers that may take this the wrong way and try to squeeze the vehicle by total accident not knowing how wide the vehicle really is. And two, this essentially makes the blind spot at night that much larger as the light is on the inside instead of the outside edge of the body.

Other then that, car looks great.

I have those lights. All I can tell you is I really love them . Best lights I've ever had. And a big 'WOW' for the way they turn with the steering wheel depending on speed and the way the auto Hi Beams work. I've not had to over ride them yet. Now I do drive with the fog lamps (which are outboard and lower) on whenever the headlamps are burning so that should eliminate the possibility of being misjudged.

You're gonna love your new ride.

JIM you have the LEDs right? Does the LED set up do the same? inside (closer to the grill) lights are on at night? High beams are outer lights?

I have the loaded 350 and I have the AFS and high beam feature as well. The inside lights are HID and the outer ones are halogens. The inside HIDs are on at night and the outer halogens are the high beams/daylight running lights.. I think.

Dous, halogen lights are only for DRL, you and I have bi-xeon.

DaRacerz, projector lamps unlike the non-projectors, light distribution is narrower and focused so if the projectors were set apart too wide, there might be "hollow" section in the middle of distribution where light can’t be reached. I think the 10RX was designed with such factor considered. Regular 10RX have the projectors placed towards outside. Or it can even be federal regulation on height placement of HID because LX and GX do not have HID option but only has AFS with halogen projector lamps. Both LX and GX’s lights are placed noticeably higher compare to RX. In any case, I don’t think safety is affected because projectors are placed few inches closer together. Like many I have the driving light set to come-on together with the headlight.

here is where my BMW shines (pun intended) better--the bimmer lites likewise swivel when turning but in addition it actually has a cornering lite feature which does a decent job of lighting what you are turning into.

Infinity is the 1st to come out with the cornering light, BMW and Audi just copy them.

Sorry no, I have the HID Bi-Xenon lights with AFS and love them. The LED's just weren't available for me. Nice trick design but I'm not convinced give that much more light.

I don't care why or how my bmw has great cornering lites--I just wish my lexus did.

the new rx has the space there to do it--I guess the bulb and wires and computer chip cost too much. And since the RX tends to be aimed at an older crowd in general, Lexus shoudl have thought this in when thinking about the pursuit of perfection.

The lights are on the inside closer to the grill because he had the optional intelligent high beams which automatically turns on and off the highbeams depending on light conditions.

Im not quite understanding your concern because if the car is skinny, peop;le who are trying to squeeze next to it would be coming from behind, and therefore wouldnt even see the headlights until they are past the car. But if this is a problem im not fully understanding, then im sure normal lighted streets would not make this a problem

Not saying it is a problem, but a concern and something I've noticed from the other perspective. At least here in NY, traffic can be wild sometimes. Where I thought this would be the biggest issue when other traffic coming for an exit ramp.

But something I didn't pay attention to, but is definitely correct by Cruiter is the fog lights being placed at the outer extents provide the full width perspective.

I agree... and people driving in front of you would have their headlights on you anyway.. At least you would hope so.

I just returned from the family trip to Pocono mountains, and got to experience AFS driving at night through the woods. In a few words, awesome. I used high beam auto-on for a while, but it keeps flipping on/off sensing oncoming traffic, cornering, etc. - more distracting than useful. AFS and HIDs are great in the dark. Every corner on the twisty roads through the woods was well lit and inspired full confidence. I really don't understand the criticism here.

Agreed, the sudden burst of the high beam shutters frequently distracts me. I prefer the new Mercedes E-Class High Beams. Actually their whole Intelligent and Adaptive Lighting system in general.

I think what DaRacerz is trying to say is that if you are driving on a two-lane street at night and say you are on the right lane and an RX350 is coming up behind you on the left lane, you may not realize the true width of the car due to the headlight configuration.

If you try to change to the left lane or "squeeze" into the left lane in front of the RX350, then you may hit the RX350? I know, not very likely, but that is what I'm able to understand.
