For the people DIY'ing this, do you all have Discount Tire nearby?
15$ labor fee for install/program/removal is well worth it imo. lol
After reading your post, I just called my closest discount tire in New Jersey and they quoted me $138 per tire (tax and install included), which is over $550 bucks for all four.
I'm curious, what if I remove the tpms sensors when I get new tires? Will that confuse the electronics?
On my vehicle, the computer will look for the sensor signal whether they are in the tire on not. If ECU does not detect a signal, then the TPMS fault light will just stay lit in the dash screen. The ECU does not know if the sensor battery is dead or if the sensor is removed. It just knows it is not receiving a signal.
Check with Discount Tire to see what they will charge you to program TPMS sensors that you supply yourself. Those New Jersey prices you quoted are significantly higher than what my long-time Discount Tire store charges here in North Carolina.

Did you have your tires bought from there? maybe that makes a difference in price? I had mine done 6 months ago. Brought them my Own TPMS and 15$ OTD for one

I just called discount tire back and asked what if I supplied my own sensors and they said sensors would have to be either an Autel sensor or compatible with Autel (I assume thats the scanner they use), and their total cost for removal, install, and programing/relearning would be $49 plus tax per wheel. Which lands somewhere around $200 plus sensor cost for 4 wheels.
I am not surprised NJ stores may charge more than other states considering NJ is one of (if not the) most expensive states for Property Tax so the cost of doing business for the discount tire stores here may be higher than in some other states.

They never asked the question if my tires were bought through them when they quoted me so I doubt if it makes a difference here. (My tires were not bought through them though).
Look like this is where a good relationship with a tire shop is key. Next time I'm in mine, I'll negotiate the sensor replacement as part of the overall deal (sourcing my own sensors of course). I may be one of the most blessed guys on the planet because I have a shop that will fix my flat FREE, even if I didn't buy the tires there. I'm rather certain they will replace my sourced sensors and program them for little cost overall. I know they have my information and have seen I've purchased 3 sets of tires there, so they know I'm coming back when the time comes.
Discount Tire fix flat for free and that goodwill has earned them loyal customers. Yes I have fix-flat-for-free from them and purchased tires through them in the past.
Many tire manufacturers are now offering hazard insurance, built into the price.
My local tire shop charges $79 to replace the sensor including parts and rebalancing. Their point of view is they have the wheel off so it isn't a lot of extra work to balance, and they don't need to presume it was balanced before they touched it.

Is that $79 the cost for 1 wheel?
So around $320 for all four?
Check the price at Costco if one is nearby. Then factor in the $65 yearly membership fee if not a member already. Or try the local BJ's or Sam's Club if closer. They are usually cheaper than other tire shops.

I called a central New Jersey Costco (near me) and they charge $43 for sensor and $15 for install so around $60 when you include tax per wheel. They said I cannot bring my own sensors. So around $240 for all 4 not including the annual membership fee. Also, they use the Dill brand Tpms sensor.
