Long before the days of TPMS, thin metal sleeves were available to slip down over the rubber valve stem. You unscrewed the valve stem cap, slipped the sleeve down over the stem, screwed the cap back on, and your valve stem assembly now looked like it was metal. Those sleeves may still be available.
Interesting -- I now vaguely recall those too ...thanks

No that changes the Schrader valve. The battery due to age needs replacement of the sender+battery [encapsulated]. If you look at the image of the sender, it can not come out of the valve and one has to break the bead and access it from the inside of the tire.
There are ways to break open the encapsulated sender and replace the battery but that is really only an option where the labor is cheap.
I understand that At 10+ yo my sensors are coming due (tpms light now comes on randomly) and trying to replace the battery is false economy in our NA marketplace -- the tires have gotta be replace anyway.
I think the reference to the metal sleeves is purely for asthetics as it slips over the existing protruding rubber Schrader valve stem.
Exactly. Aesthetics only. The sleeve simply slips over the visible part of the rubber valve stem to make it look as if it is metal. The sleeve would not interfere with the operation of the TPMS at all.
Just for giggles I located some on Amazon and Aliexpress - nowadays, most seem to be just cheap shiny dollar-store plastic or tin.
Even though they do come in limited lengths and diameters, it could still prove frustrating in finding a proper fitment for a particular model of rubber stem.
Still, it might be worth it if aesthetics are bothersome.
Haven't come across them in our chain auto shops or Costco. Valve caps -- yes.
Meh, if I find a real need for them then I'll seriously look around. Hah... maybe even the $ store
