Default Changing Door Switch Lights DIY

More info in this post: https://www.toyotanation.com/threads...parts.1732102/

I'm going with an all-white interior lighting setup in my RX350 and next up on the list after the dome lights are the window switches. In total there are 9 SMD chips that I replaced to change the window switches from greenish-yellow to white. I used 1206 chips. You will need some basic trim tools and a soldering iron to do this. I also needed a mutl-meter to confirm the polarity but you shouldn't as this should apply to all 04-09 models, as well as any other cars that use these switches incl my Highlander. Bonus points if you can get another soldering iron and helping hand to help de-solder the stubborn factory LEDs. If not, you can carefully cut the LED in half and de-solder it that way. Try to get the LEDs as flat and straight as possible for the best output. I found it helped to be as quick as possible and to heat up both sides to set the LED in place, then make small adjustments with tweezers to get it sitting perfectly flush.

Master window switch:
Removing this switch is simple, stick a plastic pry tool under the front/pointy end of the trim piece for the switch and it'll pop out, disconnect the connector and bring it inside.

Super simple to remove from the trim piece, just unscrew three philips screws! You can leave this part on the trim piece even, but I just decided to take it off

To get to the actual "guts" aka the circuit board of this bad boy, you need to pull off these three small philips screws on the back of the beige cover

The circuit board & 5 LEDs are revealed, polarity is shown above - all LEDs have the same polarity on this board. Make sure to lay the rest of the parts down somewhere safe, as there are lots of little bits that can go flying!

Make sure to check the polarity of the new LED chips you have before soldering and compare them to the circuit board's polarity!

Test it first before reassembly! All five are working? Great! Put it back together and move onto the next ones!

Passenger side door lock switch:
Removal of this switch is the same as the master window switch.

Good, now separate the switches from the trim piece! Like the master window switch, you can leave this in the bezel too but I'll show you how to remove it

Push on the tabs inward with a tool to release it, this is the best way to do it and saves the plastic from breaking. Remove the two philips screws to separate the circuit board and reveal the LED chip

Polarity shown above - Note: This polarity of this door lock switch is flipped compared to the LEDs on the master window switch

All window switches excl the master window switch:

By now you're familiar with this procedure! Identical to the other switches.

Unlike the rest of the master window switch and front door lock, you need to remove the other three single window switches out of the bezel to access the LEDs

Like the passenger front door lock switch, you need to release the top and bottom tabs with a tool to pop it out from the bezel. After that, use pressure from your hands to release these four side tabs to get to the LEDs

Polarity of the LED shown above - same as the passenger front door lock but different than the master window switch. Looks like the master switch is the odd one out!

That's it! Very simple and quick little mod that helps modernize the interior a little! The 1206s are a little brighter than the factory LEDs too which is always welcome. If you wanted to do the steering controls too, they also use the same LEDs as well.

1206 chips can be substituted for brighter, larger 3528 / PLCC2 chips. This was done on a 2006 RX400h. Same procedure for all 04-09.

Now for the reason for this post! A brief DIY on how to change the door handle ambient lights. Very simple to change compared to the window and lock switch lights:

Here’s the door handle light! Use your hands or a flatblade to push those tabs in to release it. Tuck the wiring around the insulation and use a small flatblade to pop in the push tabs to detach the harness

Polarity: White wire - Positive, Black wire - Negative
Bulb type: 3mm LED, orange, waterclear, 3v - DIM!!!

Two tabs face down on light housing

Connector faces down

Done!
