Current gas mileage? This normal?
Hi everyone, how goes it?
was just wondering what you're all getting these days in terms of gas milage?
i usually put premium fuel (91 octane). Lately, i've been getting anywhere from 470-500(max) km on a full tank of gas. The 470km is with brand new all-season tires, not winter.
are you getting anywhere neat that? anything wrong with my milage?
thanks

Dennis...
i probably get a bit more milage than you. I'm always wondering if i'm really low in milage and what i can do to improve. I've changed:
engine filter, pcv valve, spark plugs (not exactly same ones that where in there, but i think are ok?), ignition coil's, throttle body gasket, intake gasket.
anything else I'm missing?
i'm close to 220 000km. Maybe o2 sensors??

I basically get 22 mpg, whether a mix of short freeway and a bit of city driving, or a recent 600 mile Las Vegas freeway trip mostly doing 70 +/- 5 mph.
The RX 400h’s computer indicates 23.1 mpg, but actual calculation at the pump with the car’s odometer reading is about 1 mpg lower at 22mpg.

As for Octane, Google “US octane rating vs RON” for lots more information.
… America, by contrast, uses the average of the RON and the MON figures, called the AKI (anti-knock index). Thus, 97 octane “super unleaded” in Britain is roughly equivalent to 91 octane premium
In essence American 90-octane fuel would be the same as European 95 octane fuel. Thus, regardless of where you live or the octane number on the pump, most unleaded fuel worldwide are the same. In Europe the number maybe 95, but it is no different than 90 octane fuel in America.
The Australian 98 octane is probably closer to US premium unleaded at 93 AKI octane.
Update...
just filled up car. The gas light had just come on. I got 470km on a tank. I guess not too bad?
question ... i noticed when filling up that at this station, 91 octane contains no ethanol. Is ethanol bad for the lexus?
thanks

Ethanol is not necessarily bad for the car in terms of causing physical damage, but it does not have the energy content of gasoline. Manufacturers used to make FLEXFUEL cars, meaning that the car could run on either gasoline or ethanol. When running on ethanol, the gas mileage was 25% less than using gasoline.
Popularity died off when studies showed that it took more energy to produce ethanol than it delivered.

hey gang, well, i've been keeping an eye out on my milage. It seems to have been getting better. I got new all seasons (bridgestones), switched to high octane (no ethanol) gas.
maybe this helped?

I get about 22 mpg on 87 octane with mixed driving (more hwy) in my 2008 RX350. I tried 91 and it went to about 23, but noticed no performance or significant mileage difference for it to be worth it for me. This reading is with new spark plugs, cleaned MAF, TB, intake, etc so that’s probably making a small difference. Lowering the car and taking the roof rack off also probably helped some too. Although I have bigger and heavier brakes front and rear, plus I need new tires (waiting on an alignment, which is also WAY off as I redid all suspension and steering components).
I drive pretty spiritedly and passing people on the HWY usually doesn’t require me to go above 3.2k RPM, so the hit to the mileage is a lot less. If I drove the same in the Highlander, it would get worse mileage with the 4-speed auto working overtime and some of it being the smaller 3.0 V6.
