Default Rooftop Tent?

Hi all,

Has anyone ever put a rooftop tent on an RX330 or similar model? I’ve searched the forums but have never found anything.

I have a 2004 RX330 with the roof rack and crossbars. I live in the pacific north west and there are great places to camp out here but I’d prefer to have an RTT rather than having to setup an actual tent when we just want to stop somewhere for a night.

I had to sell my 4Runner when I moved out here due to garage space concerns and now we have just the RX330 but I’d really like to find a way to put a RTT on it. The stock roof rack and crossbars feel sturdy enough but I know they barely get used on this model and I’m not able to find numbers for the weight capacity of the roof would be both in motion and when stationary.

Does anyone have any experience with this or with maybe adding an aftermarket roof rack that would add some weight capacity on the roof? Thanks

I don't believe the roof rack on a rx is that sturdy, maybe 100lbs at most. I've never seen a tent setup on a rx. I believe its mainly for looks as my wife likes it as I mentioned about removing it.....If it was me & you going camping often, I would of kept the 4runner & sold the rx...As you know the rx is setup softly (cuv) vs a 4runner (suv).....

The owners manual for my 2007 says "Do not exceed 165 lb. (75 kg) cargo weight on the roof luggage carrier."

I have a 2004 rx330 with a first generation iKamper of 185 lbs. it’s over 6 foot long unit and it works great. I wouldn’t do any trampolining in it but it has been solid as a rock. Used it for two seasons. Use Thule bars - the rectangular ones not the flat ones. I made a camp kitchen for the back too which adds weight but no problems. 4 pull out shelves from Costco in a wooden case. A marine battery trickle charged from the plug in back there every time I drive with an inverter for 110 power. Great little set up

Sounds great. But I can't imagine it!
I'd love to see a pic of this.

Lol. copy that. My wife has often commented that my need for fresh air, nature’s bounty and sleeping under the stars (cos I love all that camping thing and sleep so well) she must be put up in 5 star hotel while I camp. Anyhow no holidays have been had in 2020. Though I did camp in my own garden.

I think the GS and Landcruisers are up to the job of supporting roof weight.

The thing I like about my 400 is how slim it is yet still spacious. Modern vehicles have become so wide. But it just isn’t wide enough nor probably strong enough to support my bulk let alone 2. Wife is slim me less so.

Hi tvanbrum, are you still utilizing this configuration? Have you encountered any issues with the roof rack after several years of use? Based on your experience, would you still recommend it?
