Default Roof Rack

I went shopping for a 2010-2013 RX350 and have noticed the absence of the cross-bars on the roof racks. I have an older RX and thought the cross-bars were standard equipment. The salesman at the Lexus dealership said that the outer rails are also an option. It would seem to me that without a roof-rack the RX is just a " wagon "!

With and without cross-bars and roof rails has evolved through MYs and with options people get on their rides, with some variation also by country -- e.g. on my essentially fully-optioned US 2013 RX450h, cross-bars were eliminated as a standard item in that MY, but roof rails remain. I could spend the money and buy the accessory cross-bars if I want to -- which I don't as they just cut down on mileage and then take me longer to wash and dry the top each week -- plenty of room inside for my needs.

From reading threads here over the years, there are people that take one or the other off their RX if they have them -- and complain they had to pay for something they didn't want; and there are others that go out and buy one or the other roof accessories if their RX does not come with them. Having read and participated in this forum for years, Lexus could never create a single decision to have them or not and please a majority of customers.

Some people have that opinion. With the 2013's they are options. The rails are part of an options package. The cross bars are a separate option. By having it that way, those people who don't want one or both options don't have to get them.

Other SUV's have similar options.

You'd be surprised to know that some people on this forum have tried to remove the roof rack to get a cleaner look
