Default Toyota Genuine Oil Filter 90915-YZZD1 vs 90915-YZZD3

Toyota 90915-YZZD1 [$6.01]

Quote from web:
"This filter is manufactured by Denso and is rather unique. For starters, the cartridge has no end caps to speak of. Each pleat is thermally bonded shut at the ends about 3/16" inward. This was accounted for in the surface area measurement, however this filter still has the largest surface area out of the entire group: 160 sqin. The main reason for this is the narrow core tube, which allowed for very deep pleats and thus a very long filter element. A wide core tube is not needed for such a short filter. The filter does use a plastic bypass valve similar to the Fram filter, however I could not make this one leak. It is also held in place by a steel clip rather than plastic tabs like the Fram."

Thanks 5W40. I was wondering what the differences were. I'll use this one next time.

90915-YZZD1 is factory recommended used on RX330, but 90915-YZZD3 is also directly fit for RX330 as I tested !

The Differences:
The Cost: YZZD3 $4.05 [Walmart & Amazon before I post ] vs YZZD1 $6.01, unfortunately the price almost same this month.
Filter Media Area: YZZD3 203 sq in vs YZZD1 160 sq in. I think filter media area the larger the better even if they are same price.
The Size: YZZD3 4.1" height vs YZZD1 3.38". same OD but YZZD3 is 3/4" longer than YZZD1.
Others are remain the same.

If installation space available both are exchangeable like on RX330.

No engine performance differences but a better filter performance if I may say.

Pre-Prime the filter before installation first and that will shorten dry running time for best results.

Have fun!

I use the D1 for the RX and D3 for the SC. Thanks for reminding me. The SC has a 4.3 Liter vs the 3.3 on the RX.

Makes sense. The pressure drop on a bigger filter will also be lower. Do not know how it would affect anything negatively.

Oil pressure is an important factor in the longevity of most internal combustion engines. With a forced lubrication system (invented by Frederick Lanchester), oil is picked up by a positive displacement oil pump and forced through oil galleries (passageways) into bearings, such as the main bearings, big end bearings and camshaft bearings or balance shaft bearings. Other components such as cam lobes and cylinder walls are lubricated by oil jets.

Sufficient oil pressure ensures that the metal of the rotating shaft (journal) and the bearing shell can never touch, and wear is therefore confined to initial start-up and shutdown. The oil pressure, combined with the rotation of the shaft, also hydrodynamically centers the journal in its shell and cools the bearings. Such a bearing is known as a fluid bearing.

Oil pressure is higher when the engine is cold due to the increased viscosity of the oil, and also increases with engine speed until the relief valve in the oil pump opens to divert excess flow. Oil pressure is lowest under hot idling conditions, and the minimum pressure allowed by the manufacturer's tolerances is usually given at this point. Excessive oil pressure may indicate a blocked filter, blocked oil gallery or the wrong grade of oil. Low oil pressure indicates worn bearings or a broken oil pump.

Some vehicle engines have an oil pressure switch that switches a warning light on at low oil pressure. Some vehicles have an oil pressure gauge in the dashboard or instrument cluster.

Oil pressure is created by a fluid flow restriction in the outlet line of the pump. Not as commonly believed,[citation needed] by the pump itself. Restrictions being big end and main bearings, plus camshaft and rocker gear if fitted.

I'm willing to try it out.
Mandyfig, my 2002 GS430 has the same motor as your SC. I concur with 5W40 as far as being that the D3 filter has more surface it should have better filtering.
One question though, would this increase oil flow resistance? A couple of mechanics told me some time ago that they didn't recommend extended interval filter because of this. In any case, I doubt that it would make a big difference in my case since I don't let the filter get too dirty. I use synth 5w30 with oci every 5k miles. This usually occurs once a year now that I'm out of the work force. My car has 98k+ miles, all stock.
What do you guys think?

I don't think so.
I change oil with filter every 8K km or every 6 months with dino 5W30 or synth 5W30 and never extend change interval for 06 RX330 now at 220K km engine running smooth like new. Most of its engine life I use yzzd1 filter and dino 5W30.

Why not supporting the CL vendor? $4.38 (There's also a CL discount code)

They offer CL discount and free shipping for over $150 - I usually order a box of 10 filters + other parts....

seems a smaller oil filter would provide oil pressure sooner
