2005 RX 330 Air Suspension Struts Top Bushing Loose
Hey Everyone,
Hoping for some help here.
Long story short, I've had a bad thumping sound when going over bumps coming from the front suspension for the last year. I've replaced the balljoints, lower control arm bushings, sway bar end links, and sway bar bushings. Replacing all of those items did help, but I still hear that annoying thumping sound.
So a few nights ago I jacked up the car to investigate some more, this is what I found.
1) The strut mounting bolt on the passenger side air strut is loose and the driver side is solid.
How did I find this? With the front wheels in the air, and the covers removed, I leveraged the wheel from the bottom and noticed the play on the strut mounting bolt on the passenger side.
Now these aren't the 3 bolts that mount the strut to the car. The bolt that is loose is the one that has the air line running to it and is in the middle of the assembly when you look at it from the top.
Has anyone ever tightened this bolt or had this issue?
I tried to tighten the bolt but the entire assembly rotates. And You have to be careful not to over rotate the entire assembly becasue you could damage the air bag.
I have 1 of 2 problems.
1) Simply the nut is loose and needs to be tightened
2) The bushing is worn out and needs to be replaced, but is not replaceable on the air strut assemblies.

Welp! I found out the hard way that you should NEVER EVER tighten the strut mounting nut on the air suspension.
Because you have the air line going into the strut, that shaft is very thin, so thin that when I tightened that bolt it snapped.
And guess what, when it snapped, I had a major air leak!
Replaced the entire suspension with the normal springs.
