Default ECT SNOW Switch

Just purchased a 2007 RX350 w/front wheel drive. We just had our first snow storm in Boston. The manual says to use the ECT SNOW switch when it's slippery. Around here, it's slippery a LOT! What exactly does that switch do? Should I leave it on the majority of the time will my mileage get worse?

Is it acting in effect, like 4-wheel drive?

Anyone with front wheel drive offer snow performance critique?

Thank you!

It starts the car off in second gear to prevent wheel slippage. It has no effect on top speed.
