I just purchased a 2008 Rx 350 this week. It is in magnificent condition, has all of the service papers and was given a very positive bill of health from the Lexus dealer we purchased it from. My question is how many miles can I hope to get on this engine if serviced well. It has 82,000 now so what is the general opinion of the forum friends?

 

200-300k or maybe even more miles. Cars last a lot longer nowadays. Just change the oil and fluids as scheduled, and it will treat you well. I've probably spent less than $1500 on my 06 IS350 on maintenance since buying it excluding tires and I've had no problems with it.

I sure hope your 2008 RX has a much better track record than mine since I have had a number of early failures that are fairly common with this generation of the 3.5L V6 engine. First my OEM battery failed after just 3 years (I blamed the battery manufacturer) and Lexus replaced it free of charge, 2) water pump failed after 48,000 miles (again common with this vintage), 3) front engine cover gasket failed after 55,000 miles (again common with this vintage), 4) transmission surging (no permanent fix on it), 5) fuel tank failed to allow automatic fill at the gas pump when you click that lever (dealer has not found a fix yet). Of all the Lexuses I have owned the past 16 years, this RX has been the most trouble prone. With all these early failures, I have no confident this engine will last till 100,000 miles without some more breakdowns. My RX is meticulously maintained by dealer according to the factory recommendation since new. If you plan to keep your 2008 for a few years past the warranty, suggest you consider getting an extended warranty to protect your pocket book. In my case, #1, #2, #3, #4 are covered by warranty but it is the after warranty issues that scare me about this vehicle. Good luck.

 

Don't be scared by after warranty issues. It's less compare to other cars and aftermarket parts are not expensive. Many fit to both Toyota and Lexus models.

 

There are two oil lines that can fail on these. One is the vvt-i oil line. If you bought the car from a Lexus dealer, it should be fixed because there was a recall. The second oil line that can fail is the oil cooler line. They are failing left and right and there is a TSB on it:

Toyota & lexus thus far refuse to do a recall desoute many failed engines.

Check your VIN. Not sure if all RX's have oil cooler or if it only comes with trailer tow package.
Many with Siennas have this issue and don't even know it because Siennas came standard with trailer tow package.
