how to clean auto dimming mirror gel
I broke my outside auto-dimming mirror. The electrochromic gel that dimms it ran down the door.
I've tried several things to clean it without success. 1 water, 2 alcohol, 3 nail polish remover.
any suggestions?

Wow according to that thread it "reacts with paint?!" $300 for new mirror + $300 to repaint the door, awesome!
I'll still try WD40, will report back if it helps.

Sorry to hear that=(
Try to use Goof Off, or any other graffity remover.
There is no acetone anymore in nail polish removers, you can try acetone from paint department at Home Depot, but you need to careful with it, try on small spot first. And keep acetone away from plastic and rubber.
i hope it will help you.

Some sort of buffing compound or an abrasive type cleaner wax sounds in order. But it will remove some of the clear coat., so be careful. Maybe check with a good detailing shop or body shop to see if they can buff it out using commercial products instead of the weaker stuff sold to DIYers.
I don't think goo gone or wd 40 will work, because I dont' think you have something sticky that needs to be removed, instead the liquid has actually stained the paint??

how to clean auto dimming mirror gel
The thread here is pretty old, but I figure someone else will need this info. So my husband was driving my 2004 RX330 down our alley and someone had left their trash can too far out in the drive area. He hit it with my passenger side mirror going at a pretty good clip. The housing of the mirror was all good, the mirror cracked and then spilled this awful goo all the down the side of my car. Well, it was Christmas time, weather was bad and, thinking it was just oil, we ignored it for about 2 weeks. In the meantime, it just got worse and looked terrible. I took the car to our auto repair shop in our neighborhood and they immediately asked how long this stuff had been on the car. They freaked out when I said two+ weeks. Told me the car would have to be repainted and that nothing got that stuff off. Well after they order a new mirror to go on top of the old one, because I am not spending over 450.00 on a new one, I came home and started trying anything to get that mess off of my car. I found this thread and saw the words oxidation....ok then!!! What oxidizes? Silver! I pulled out two different silver cleaners. They both worked. There are a couple of places that are stained and you can see the stain if you look pretty hard. It's faint, but there. I had to work about an hour to get most of it off. Some of it would just scratch off with my fingernail, but would not come off with the silver polish. My fingernails couldn't take the abuse, so I used the edge of an unsharpened pencil. It was soft enough not to scratch the paint, but got the job done. The polish did not hurt the finish and it really got the job done.
