It is just the nature of the material they use. Feels nice to touch when new, but exposure to the great outdoors turns it to mush over time.

Thanks for note back. Seems so odd though after so long and having used and seemed in tact 3 months ago, to mush as you mentioned.
Just replace within Amazon part, fits well, but wow it is a black sticky mess (gloves for sure as youtube suggest).
Also, those screws are very tight should have used some anti-seize or soap. I can see why dealer replaces whole assembly which the youtube video also shows how to remove trunk lid backing if desired.

After thoroughly cleaning out that black mess, device works fine ($13.5 on Amazon) done deal vs almost $400 by dealership.
Good job guys, keep up the good info and we'll save ourselves a ton of agony and money.

I have this issue and can say that it doesn't matter where you live- I live in philly. car has been garaged for the last 5 years and this occured. Bought a $5 replacement rubber off ebay, waiting for it to show up now

The fleabay replacement for the cover works. I got one off mazon. And had 2 other friends replace theirs with the aftermarket too. That was a fail on Lexus, bet you they learned their lesson. A TECH Bulletin was issued for sure,
