Default tires

hi guys....i know this has been discussed many time before, however i couldn't find anything on this tire size:

225/70/r17?

will these tires fit on a standard alloy rim, without the need for spacers etc?

will the clearance be an issue for the strut?

thats alot of sidewall, thats pickup truck territory. you will notice dimished handling and a much softer ride.

the tire will also be a little taller too, so it might affect speedometer and could rub.

softer more cushy ride is what im looking for.....not that concerned with handling..

do you think it will cause rubbing issues?

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
225/65-17 5.8in 14.3in 28.5in 89.6in 707 0.0%
225/70-17 6.2in 14.7in 29.4in 92.4in 686 3.1%

looks like you are growing an extra inch, 28.5 to 29.4 inches. so i would go out to your vehicle and measure from the top of the tire up .5 of an inch and see if you have the room.

this really isnt the way to go about softening the ride, you should really stick with the stock tire. the engineers spent alot of time figuring out which tire size would work best.

how would you suggest i soften up the ride?

i am going to get some monroe comfort gas shocks, and perhaps looking at putting in softer springs...

Wou'dnt the larger tire sidewall help with the ride? again...not really conerned about handling...

what about wider tires? say 235/65/r17?

i guess the question is, why do you want a softer ride? and how much softer do you want it to be?

perhaps this isnt the right vehicle?

the reason i want a softer ride is because i live in east africa....the roads aren't in the best condition, and i wanted that 'cloud' like ride over the rutted and potholed roads that i envisioned. the family has a land cruiser vx, and that rides very nicely over the ruts..
i think i made the right choice in vehicle, however i just want to fine tune the ride to suit my needs....and that is a more cushy, softer set up

Sounds like you need a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis, not the RX?

given that information, the 70 series tire might just work out, perhaps even a 75 series if available.

since it does not hurt the tire to get mounted and balanced, you might be able to find a shop which will let you put different tires on to see if they fit, whether they let you drive on them is another issue.

instead of new struts, you could try and track down some struts which are shot, might give you a more "cloud" like ride.

or swap out the RX for the LX, since ithe land cruiser is the same as the LX
