It is best that you have a good relationship with a Tech. Then stuff like this, you are good to go.

Do you have to prove the dealership with some paper to show you are the owner of the car ?

Thanks for the tips. I just bought an 06 400H and my master key only lock and unlocks the car.
I'm going to head to my toyota dealership and try to get it programmed.

Due to some suggestions here on the forum, I asked the service writer politely "as a courtesy would you program this key for me". I was very surprised when he said "As a courtesy to you, sure", took the key and 15 minutes later I had me new key programmed.

I told him that I was fairly certain that it needed hooked up to the computer for programming, that it wasn't the open door/close door/accessory 6 times program. We'll see tomorrow. The local locksmith that is a "transponder specialist" quoted me $75, so I don't feel $50 is too bad.
I am adding 3rd key to my car, I have a so called 'guts' in my hand. My aim is to just open/close doors. I have 2 choices now,
#1 I know someone on ebay selling 2 blank keys, will cut keys and send the shell only $40, free shipping. Need the key code I do not have that, as the private seller misplaced the key code. The Ebay seller willing to cut key from pictures I send in. How good are the cut keys will be ? As the 2006 rx330 has security feature will programming '6 times' work ?
#2 I will grab a blank key and go to the dealer and have them programmed ? Which is a better route ?

By the way how to get the key code from dealer ?
thanks.

Forum newbie here, sorry about bringing this thread back. I've been lurking the forum for a couple weeks now. I bought a used 2004 RX330 a couple weeks ago that came with only one master key. Following the advice of fellow CL members who avoid dealers, I bought a Lexus DENSO master key blank (that included the transponder) online for $70. I took it to a local locksmith who usually charges $10 to cut a "laser" cut key. But felt he didn't do a great job, so he didn't charge me. I called 2 other Lexus dealers here in the Bay Area and got quotes for around $70 to program the key. Last week, we had to return a leased Infiniti to an Infiniti dealer that was right next door to another Lexus dealer. We walked in and just asked them politely if they could program our key and they did it for free.

a couple observations and peeves:

-The locksmith had a hard time cutting the blank. I had to go back one more time because the dealer could not turn the key in the ignition cylinder. After he smoothed it down a little, we got it to turn.

-DIY programming: 2004 and up RX models cannot be programmed via pedal dance. 2003s and older can be though.

-The DENSO key is a little longer than the original Lexus key (it sticks out of the ignition cylinder a little)

but for what I paid, I'm happy.

Good for you. Have to have a 2nd key. If not for my credit card key, I would get a 2nd one.

Everything else on the internet failed (including the procedure posted above), but this procedure worked for me on my 2006 RX330:

Hopefully this helps someone else.
