Sorry to post another oil change thread but all my reading has still left me looking for advice. We recently traded our RX330 for a RX350 and I'm trying to decide on an oil change interval and what oil to use. The 350 is a CPO so I don't want to do anything to compromise the warranty but I will be doing the maintenance myself. I've pretty much decided to use the Toyota equivalent oil filter (found the number on this sight) but the oil is up in the air. I believe I have to change every 5000 miles to keep the warranty. The dealer wasn't very helpful and said we had to use synthetic blend as indicated in the manual but I never found that info. I would go Mobil1 synthetic as that's what I run in our other vehicle but so many say to run it 10,000 miles or so. Seems like a waste at such quick change intervals. If I'm going to change every 5000 I might just go with Castrol conventional. I'm really scratching my head here. I would greatly appreciate some tips.

I would say go with the Mobil 1. You can find it anywhere, plus it's relatively cheap at Walmart only about $26 for a 5qt jug.

 

I use Pennzoil Platinum most of the time,or Mobil-1. I`m going to try the Kendall GT-1 Synthetic blend next oil change.

 

You think just stick with the 5000 mile interval?

 

Lexus owners manual for the 2010 RX350 states that your motor oil must meet or exceed the ISLAC GF4 recommendation. I've read that it is not possible to meet the GF4 requirement with non-synthetic oils at the recommended 0W20 grade.

I thought the recommended oil was 5w20. But you refer to the 2010 RX, which is 3rd gen, not second gen (which is this forum). Is the 2nd gen recommendation now 0w20?

 

it is really unlikely that lexus would switch from 5w30 to 0w20 after production.

it is wise to follow there recommendation and stick with 5w30,

personally, even though synthetics do last longer than conventional oil, i dont like the idea of not changing the oil past 5,000 km. which is why i use castrol non synthetic, and a factory filter and i change the oil every 5,000 km. i change it myself, so it only costs me about 25 bucks.

 

Here is a TSIB that shows that Lexus has recommended 5W20 ISLAC GF4 for all 2006 Lexus vehicles and the new 2010 RX350 is now 0W20. My dealer installed 5W20 in my RX330 at my last service. The 2010 indeed specifies 0W20 and uses basically the same motor (GR) as the 2006 and later RX350 so I'd like to find some updated reference for this too.

The RX300 uses a MZ engine so they are ok for 5W20 oil.
The RX330 uses a MZ engine so they are ok for 5W20 oil.
The RX350 uses a GR engine so they are ok for 5W20 oil. The 2010 RX350 is also a GR engine but calls for 0W20 in the manual.

 

It took a bit of looking but I found that Castrol GTX in both 5W-20 and 5W-30are ISLAC GF4 rated oils. If I'm going to be changing the oil every 5k miles anyway I may very likely go with Castrol GTX. I would change the oil and filter every 5k miles and retain my factory warranty.

 

I'm using Toyota's own 0w20 in my 2006 RX400h (with the 3MZFE engine) and so far it hasn't blown apart the engine. I recentlly did a UOA (used oil analysis) and prior to that a VOA (virgin oil analysis). The UOA shows very low wear and lots of active additive (TBN #) left after 6000KM. I plan to run this for 10000KM, but Toyota has said the oil can be left in for 10000 MILES, in approved vehicles. I had an extremely long discussion with the parts manager at my local Toyota dealer when I bought a case of the 0w20 during which he showed me email correspondence with Toyota Canada corporate confirming that the oil was synthetic, and also a list of engines which were approved to run the 0w20 - the 3MZFE was on the list.

Regardless of all that, I still would have run the 0w20 in my vehicle.

I thought of sharing this with everyone as if i were to hear this I would not believe it to be possible. My girlfriend did not change her oil for 41,000km! She has 2007 Lexus rx350. The oil used was 5w20 Castrol syntec from cosco.
The engine runs strong and so far burns no oil. She drives every day to work about 130km. (Highway)
I have not done any other testing of the motor like compression or a leak down would be ideal but hey, 41000 km on the motor oil! Holly chit!

 

+1 I have always used synthetic oil (Mobil1 - 5W30) since RX350 was purchased new in 2009. Over the past (nearly) year, I have been using the Toyota 0W20 oil because my dealer has (finally!) seen the light - that Lexus had approved such oil for the 2009RX350, with the proviso of max 10K miles or 10 months - and have just gone through my first 'Toyota' oil change. The engine is fine, consumed no oil. While I was fully confident in the "0W" side - much better than 5W though here in Miami not sure it makes that much of a difference - I was wondering about the "20" side rather than 30. But the article I reference below convinced me that there not much to the change, and that it could be beneficial .
The Toyota 0W20 oil is an excellent oil, and I am sure that it can last as long as Toyota says.
