Default Windshield Replacement

Hi Everyone,

I need to get my windshield replaced and my insurance company will only pick up an after market windshield. The cost of a Lexus windshield (with automatic wipers) is over $1500! Does anyone know if after market is just as good? My deductible is $500 so I would have to pay the entire amount if I wanted to go with Lexus.

Thansk so much!

I think when your insurance company states aftermarket, they just mean a used Lexus windshield which in that case you will be fine. I don't think there is such a thing as aftermarket windshields.

The sensors for rain detect is transferred to the new windshield. There are no OEM windshields.

Get a good glass supplier. They will do the right procedure. You do not need to use Lexus if you do not like their price.

There are reputable suppliers out there.

Back in September Safelite replaced my '08 RX350 windshield, using their own brand of glass. They transferred the rain sensor, using the Lexus OEM gelpad. The total bill was $265, so I didn't even have my insurance involved, because I get a pretty good discount for no claims. They did an excellent job. So, my windshield does not say "Lexus" in the corner anymore, but I am okay with it.

If your Lexus is leased you might do well to check with your dealer as to what glass replacement they will accept without penalty.

In the meantime here is some suggested reading.

Be sure to ask if quote includes rain sensor and acoustic insulated glass.

But not enough for me to spend an extra over $1K on a windshield.
I have had 4-5 replacement non oem windshields over the years and never had a problem.Never had an acoustic insulated glass install, though.
The key is good install and reputable shop.Acoustic insulated glass sold by Safelite,Pennington Glass and others?
As far as dealer install goes ...most dealers and bodyshops have a glass shop installer do the install even if with OEM glass.

I believe that the "Acoustic Glass Windshield" was OEM on the model 2007 RX and later.

Do you guys know if I make a $1500 claim (use original Lexus OEM) for the replacement of the windshield, will the insurance company increase my premium? Also, if not mind, my 2nd Q is how long should I make the claim after the damage? Thanks all!
