OEM Navigation exchange
Hi guys,
I just picked up an 2004 Lexus RX that comes with Navigation, but I really don't like the screen. I am wondering is it possible to change it to a Generation 4 or Generation 5 system for the right price?
thanks
Adam

Not for the "right price." Surely it could be done for "a price," but the cost of changing out the systems is not commensurate with the relatively marginal improvements.
If you really "don't like" the screen, your best bet is to forget about it, use it anyway, and find comfort in knowing that your next car will have a better screen.

What about upgrading the ECU DVD player? I heard others have upgraded their generation 3 ECU to a generation 4 ECU, I am wondering if that is the same play and plug for the Rx?

I have a Gen 3 in one of my cars and a Gen 4 in another (which allows me to use the same DVD in both), and although the Gen 4 has a few extra features that the other lacks, I certainly would not spend a lot of time or money to upgrade. Even if you do, you will still have the same POI and map data, and the same screen. You will get a few extra icons, though.

Are you sure about the screen not changing?
This member with from a generation 2 to a generation 4 and his screen looks totally different, but I can be wrong.

the map data for Gen 3 goes up to like 2 million POIs, while the Gen 4 and 5 have up to 8 million POIs. One thing that I don't like about the Gen 3 on my wife's RX is that it doesn't even have simple things like post offices and movie theatres. The Gen 5 on my GX seems to have everything.
I may have to consider this upgrade if it is as simple as it seems.

I just wanted to say that I did this upgrade with my wife's RX. It is truly plug and play. Works great and seems much faster than the Gen 3. Also, the # of POIs is much higher -- has as many as the Gen 5. Can even search via phone # which I like a lot.

Did you simply pull out the Gen 3 unit, put in a Gen 4 unit, connect it and power it on?

Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the in-dash CD player that is in the 2004 to the one that is in the 2007-2009 RX 350s? I would need the one that goes with the Mark Levinson system. Would the amp also need to be changed? How much would an upgrade like this cost?
