Default Paint Match

I recently bought a set of running boards for my 04 RX330 but the color is black. I would like to repaint it to match with my color (Flint Mica - 1E0) since it would look funny with 2 different colors. Could someone guide me how to get the paint, perhaps from a local Toyota dealer or any auto parts store? Do they have some kind of a spray paint for this application? How much would it be? How many cans that I would need, etc???

Are there any preparation steps before the new paint (flint mica)can be applied over the existing (black) color? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would suggest call Lexus dealership and get couple of names of body repair shops. Usually they will be among the most expensive repair shops but will be familiar with color matching and finish that matches well.

Good suggestion, Salim. Or else, a good body shop knows what to do and can get the paint you need.

BTW, Salim where's Jamal?

Painting auto parts is very tricky and not a job for an amateur. I'd take the parts to a body shop and let them do the whole job for you. You will have the parts back in a day or two, perfectly painted with perfectly matching paint, with no muss or fuss on your part, and I would not think that the charge would be very much, as there will be virtually no prep or masking work to be done.

Go find a reputable body shop and ask them to do it for you. It'll be around $150 -$200 range to paint match and may blend a bit to make it too right. Don't do this yourself, unless you have a lot of free time, a good Iwata spray gun and compressor, just too expensive to do it by yourself.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into the local body shops to get some estimates. Great tips.

Guys,

I came across in finding this site, www.paintscratch.com. Does anybody know if the spray paint would work in repainting the running board? I would like to paint it in flint mica over black to match with the body color. Are there any special steps that need to prep before painting this over? I try not to bring it to the body shop since it would cost some money. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

"It would cost some money . . . ."
If you screw it up by trying to paint the parts yourself, which is very difficult, you will either have to buy another set or have a shop paint over your mistakes.
Painting car parts is tricky and requires training and practice - that's why we pay experts with experience to do it for us. I think you need to re-read all of the posts above once again. It sounds to me like you started this project without thinking it through.

I agree with you. I'll have the body shop to get this done. Thanks again.

Not only that, but a shop who has dealt with Lexus paint and finish.
