So I got a quote for a set of rear parking sensors with buzzer and 4 sensors. The thing is they told me that the rear bumper will need to be removed on the RX, and quoting $500 total. I told them it was too expensive now they quote $320 and they said that they discovered that the rear bumper does not need to be taken off and instead they will simply drill through it and the Styrofoam. Does this sound safe? According to them this how all non factory parking sensors are installed?
The sensor is black and will look like and installed flush like the one in the picture.
I would appreciate a response or does no one know the answer? Which I highly doubt as reading some posts on the forum makes it clear that most members are highly informed and knowledge about their Lexus cars and trucks.
I had a similar aftermarket set of sensors installed on delivery of my '08 RX. Dealer actually painted them for me and they match the bumper very well (Savannah). Retails was $500.00, had them toss them in free on the deal. I have only 2 sensors; was offered the 4 sensor system, but they discouraged that, indicating the sensors would interfere with themselves. Apparently these can be focussed or aimed for best coverage. I do get tehm triggering when backing out of the garage (single door). Mine appear just about the same as those in the picture, but they do stick out a small amount. System works well; they wired them into the back-up lamps. The beeper is secured to the parking brake bracket. It has high, low, off settings. I have it on high. Works like a charm!
personally, i would hate to not have them painted. the black (unless you have a black car) would look "ugly" IMO. its worth it to me to spend the extra dough to have them painted at the dealer.
drilling a hole seems fine to me...but makes me wonder what they would have done if they charged you 500 instead of 320 in the beginning
Here's a picture of one of mine. Note that there is a small backing plate behind the actual sensor. This is used to "focus" the signal. The bumper cover is not flat and the sensor needs to be near vertical for proper function. Picture doesn't do the colour justice; in reality it is a very close match.

nice I wish I ordered mine to be the same color as the car as yours. Now did you take off the bumper or just drill through the bumper and styrofoam as the dealer told me they were going to do?
No idea how it was done; they were there when I picked the car up. Since these are aftermarket, they had a 3rd party car eletronics shop do the work. I think it highly unlikely that they took the cover off as that would require more time and increase the potential for damage.
Here in UK Lexus are offering official sensor kit , 4 front and rear. Called the 800 series kit I think. Fronts on all the time and rears when R engaged. Both can be switched off if need be. To the best of my knowledge they put a template on each fender and drill the holes without removal.
