Have a 2005 Lexus RX330 with 312,000 miles and do all my code reading with a standard code reader. Although not having any real problems with the car I suspect it is just a matter of time before before something in the electronics acts up. I keep seeing references to TECHSTREAM to use for troubleshooting and programming. I have done a bit of research on line and as best as I can tell it is just software I download to my laptop. Can anyone confirm if this is the case also what other accessories I will need I don't want to be out in the cold and have no choice but a tow to Lexus dealer and the rather exorbitant prices they are are so fond of

It is the actual software that Toyota uses to deep scan and sometimes customize electronics on their cars. Unlike the $30-120 low level scanners that only check for first level codes and sometimes allow for code reading and code clearing Tech stream will check every module plus allow you to view real time data while the car is running (such as fuel for through each fuel injector, airflow, timing etc. It allows you to add it erase keys (not cheap take keys on eBay), reset airbags, things low level scanners can't do. It will show stored codes other readers can and will not and allow you to erase those too
Now the catches:
I got mine via Amazon for under $30 it also comes with the fairly specific obdII cord that plugs into your car on one end and a computer USB on the other. Many believe that it just run on a very old Windows version (XP) laptop that is not true I run mine on Windows 10 but the CD it comes with will require pirated software to facilitate this was not easy to figure out. There are many versions of it, I think mine came with version 4 somehow I found how to also run version 8 now I have both. This software allowed me to buy a replacement non OEM key from a reputable locksmith I heard of and program it within 5 mins of arrival... the dealer quoted me almost $200 just for that same programming
Bottom line best $30 or less you could spend for our cars IF you're somewhat technology savvy. If your car requires a tow truck this will likely tell you WHY it's not running but won't fix it for you so that you're truck will still be needed it does show diy people to find and fix their car also shows you to better understand what the real problems are and not get hosed by dealers or indi mechanics as badly
