Cluster stopped...question
Hi Everyone,
I have a 2000 RX300, I am the second owner. It only has 160km. Today, my speedo stopped working. Tach still works and fuel indicator still works, but acts out, and does not read fuel accurately.
What could this be? Fuse I would assume...
Any insight would be appreciated...
Cheers

Do you have an ABS light on? See this thread...

@Pzindy,
Thank you for the reply! My ABS light came on because one of my caliper bolts fell off and triggered the sensor...it has been on for almost 1 year now. I am having difficulty clearing it to stay off. So there may be a connection between my axle and rings??? Seems complex...
I am going to start with the basics first. Going to scan it with a light tester first, then go from there...My CEL light has also been on for almost 1 year. CEL was caused by air-fuel sensor.

Nothing was done recently except for an oil change 5000 km ago. Going into my indy shop on Wednesday for another oil change and to get the cluster checked out.
There should be a wheel speed sensor on each wheel. Typically one of them feeds the speedometer and others do other things. You can lose one (or more) of those coils and you can get the symptoms you are seeing. Short of checking the resistance on each coil there really is no other way to see if that might be the problem except getting the codes read by a Lexus/Toyota dealer or a good indy garage. They will have the model specific analyzers which tell them things you can never get from the standard OBDII port at your local Autozone store. Even checking the resistance is often not a clear cut indication since these are Hall effect sensors. If you have one sensor that reads radically different than the others then that is a likely culprit.
Yes, the bolt was replaced right away. I will have my mechanic look at the wheel sensors on Wednesday. However, what is strange is the fact that my fuel indicator is also acting up. It is reading fuel levels incorrectly and fluctuates, which makes me believe that it could also be a fuse.

My speedometer does not work at all and my fuel gauge goes from "F" to "E" continuously when I drive. I read MaxSteels thread about his issue and it appears to be identical to mine. Fingers crossed! I also checked the fuses last night and everything seems to be ok.
Only 2 issues then. That would mean most likely 2 problems
1. Speedo
2. Fuel Gauge
Speedo gets info from wheel rotation.
Fuel gauge gets signal from the fuel level .. in the fuel tank. Make sure you find the right connector and you can disconnect to see one extreme and ground it to see the other extreme on the fuel gauge. Loose connector can give you wild swings. Once the connector to the gauge has been verified by the above check and the connector is making nice contact, then the culprit is the fuel float unit.

Salim, I know it sounds unlikely, but somehow my fuel gauge went erratic along with the speedometer fail.
I don't know how they can be related but they both returned to normal when I cleared the ABS fail.
