DIY: Add Surface Mount LED to Center Console
Hey, guys/gals!
In this thread I'm going to show you how I wired up the "Prewired Surface Mount Blue LED" to a Blue Switch, using a USB cable.Basically at first I planned on making the LED run off of the battery pack in the first picture. But, as I was going through my desk looking for batteries, I saw a few USB cables. And, then a light went off. LOL, I then realized it would be easiest to just strip the USB cable down and wire that up instead of using the battery pack. I had already bought the light up blue switch, so I decided to use it, instead of it just sitting around. But, it wasn't necessary to use because I can just turn the LED on or off using the usb cable.
I'm going to plug the USB cable into my usb to cigarette lighter adapter. Below are some pictures of how I went through and did this. I included a picture of the wiring diagram I used to complete this. Keep in mind that if you do use a USB cable like I did, once you strip it down, you only need the black and the red wire, you can snip the rest off.
If you have any questions, let me know. I know this isn't much of a DIY, but I wanted to throw it up here anyways incase anyone was interested in doing this cheap, fun, little mod.
Here are the things you need in order to do what's shown in this DIY:
• Prewired Surface Mount LED (Blue): http://www.oznium.com/prewired-surface-mount-led
• LED Round Rocker Switch (Blue): http://www.oznium.com/rocker-switch
• 12V Batter Holder (I didn't end up using this, so it's not necessary to purchase, only if you plan on using batteries to power it up): http://www.oznium.com/12v-led-battery-holder
• Any generic USB Cable
• Soldering Iron & Solder
• Electrical Tape or Heat Shrink
• A tool to strip the wires with
• Mini Car Cigarette Lighter to USB
The Surface Mount LED, already has tape on the back of it, so you can mount it anywhere you want. I just ran the wires through the center console and put the slack in the bottom drawer in the console, because I never use that. Whenever I want to use the LED light, I'll just pull the USB cable out of the bottom drawer, and plug it into the cigarette lighter adapter.

I started off by following the diagram and wiring the cables up by just twisting them around one another. At this step you should strip the USB cable. I did this to make sure everything is working as it should be.

Now, head out to the car and now attach the surface mount LED wherever you like. I attached it in the center console. So to start I pulled out the center vent, and then popped the top part of the console off. There are no screws for this, they just pop off.

Here I run the wires through the slot midway in the center console, and pull them to the front of the car, where I will keep them in the bottom drawer, and whenever I want to use the light, I will pull it out and connect it.
