Gas Mileage / Computer Accuracy
Picked up our 2000 RX on Friday, took our first road trip Sunday. Love the RX on the highway, the Nakamichi stereo is almost worth the price of the vehicle, was a great trip until I looked at the gas guage. OK, gas mileage is a BIG BIG disappointment, but I need to know what other owners have experienced. I will do the approximate conversion here, cause of course we got the metric system in Canada.
First half of trip was 260KM (160 mi) with cruise set at 120 kph (75 MPH). Got 18 miles/US gal (22 Imperial), computer said 20 miles/US gal (24 Imperial). BIG difference, and yes, I reset the computer as we pulled away from the gas pumps.
The return trip was same speed, all on cruise control, 20.6MPG US, 24.7 imperial, and the computer said 20.4MPG US, 24.5 imperial.
Regular gas, 87 octane. Terrain is 25% hills, but not big ones. temp was 60 deg, damp day, little wind. Now I know 75mph is fast, but we bought this vehicle for road trips, and the speed limit around here is 70mph most places, so 75 is a reasonable expectation for cruising (at least to me).
What are other people experiencing? our RX has 70,000KM on it (42000 miles), looks perfect, dealer maintained ( i have the service records). Any ideas? advice?

I am confused....
Are you disappointed with the mileage or the accuracy of the trip gauge or the accuracy of the calculated miles as compared to ??? your gps or computer???
Did you use cruse control?? Did you need to lick it hard when passing?? What's the elevation swing?? from sea level to 800ft??
If your driving 25% hills or moderate mountains, you are going to see less mileage, especially at 75 MPH.
My spot readings run about 24 to 32 MPG when driving around 40 MPH,,
When I get to drive 75 MPH, it drops to something like 20 - 24 MPG,,
My current average is 22.6 MPG,, My experiences are at Sea level, flat land, 80% humidity, temps well above 80 deg F, 100% air conditioned,,,
When I drive up to the main land the highest spot is Channel 5 bridge at 85 ft... 70% of my driving is under 45MPH, but on the mainland (Miami) it's any speed that keeps me from getting run over and/or shot,,, read a very aggressive 75 MPH PLUS....
Net,,, I think your milage is about average..
Good luck with your new RX....

Thanks for the response, Jimmy. I am much more concerned with the gas mileage that with the computer - when we are paying over $2 US/gal, every gallon counts!
Both trips were on cruise, divided highway all the way, no passing. Elevation from sea level to about 1000 feet & down again both ways.

Lexus Test Driver
Chuck,
Are you sure you are filling your tank to the exact same spot when you check gas consumption? There was less than 1 gal difference between the computer and your calculations. I have found the computer to be very accurate on both of my RXs. It is best to test over a few tankfulls so a small amount in the fill difference has less of an effect.
My average is 19.7 on my 2001 AWD doing 50% city 50% country roads. No highways. I do find that the RX is geared very low which causes the engine to rev pretty high at speeds over 70 and the gas miilage drops off. Also when comparing with other RXs make sure you are both AWD or both FWD.

California cars and mileage
We've done our shopping and are about to buy our new 2003 RX in southern California. We live in the Northwest and there are major price differences between our zone and theirs.
My wife has a concern, however, about the California emissions requirements versus the other 49 states. There were stories long ago about "California cars" being "choked up" or getting less mileage than the same models from other states. Is this still true? Are California RX's rated at 18-22 (city/hiway) for AWD and 19-23 for 2WD like the rest of the country? Can any Californians here answer whether they feel there is any reason to avoid a California RX or any other California car?
The difference in pollution controlling is wide enough that there are stringent requirements for California residents who buy cars out of state and try to bring them back in to California. For those of us who are not residents of California, we can buy cars there and register them in our own state without problems. If you don't live too far away and can make the numbers work like we seem to have, give it a try.

Hi
I am pretty sure Toyota/Lexus currently only sell one engine setup. At one time there was a Ca engine and everyone else, but they stoped.
Some others, ie: GM & Ford still have seperate engines.
Good Luck
