What oil are you using right now?
#77
Here's a question: I had a '01 RX300 FWD that finally died at 249k (transmission). I now have another '01 AWD with 161k that has probably had regular oil in it. I have a gallon or so synthetic left I'd like to use. Should I mix it with regular oil or run it straight? I'm thinking mixing it with regular oil would be the best bet.
I could have been taught improperly, but why take the risk, is my thought!

Not to be harsh but...you were taught improperly.
Synthetic oil isn't like some other animal here. It's still oil. Usually with a much better additive package and refined further than standard conventional oils.
I work for one of the biggest motor oil companies in the world, so I hear these old oil myths all the time. Some of which had held truth 20 years ago but oil has come a LONG way in 20 years.

As a mod, I cringe when I see a thread on 'which oil is best' which 'fuel grade is best' etc. I think this thread is about to turn ugly. Please prove me wrong. I would urge all to show maturity and class and not let this thread end up as locked.

Well, then I stand corrected! Thanks Eric, good to know! What with the RX300 having the potential to be a slow leaker, and mine certainly falls into that category, it's good to know that in a pinch I can throw in some conventional to get me through and not worry about mixing issues!
And Salim, I hope you weren't concerned that I was going to get ugly about things! I have plenty of that physically without it extending to my brain and mouth!
Hope everyone has a great Monday... I'm wearing black, in mourning for the loss of this past weekend.

I was in no way being confrontational. After reading my response I can see how it could be not well received. My apologies!
Glad you found a cost effective way to get by in a pinch!

Thank You.
This is a wonderful board.
When I was approached to be a Mod it took me a while to say Yes.
It is folks like you that I have not regretted saying yes.

I'll second that. It's been a nice experience here on the first gen RX board. The maturity of our members really shows. Which is basically what makes or breaks a board. Happy to be a part.
