Default Castrol Edge Oil

Just reading an article on Castrol Edge Synthetic oil. Is anyone out there using it or tried it in your RX-350? Any comments please.

I prefer Pennzoil Ultra.

That said, there is no best motor oil for every vehicle.

BTW, this is an excellent source for oil information.

I have my stash of Castrol Edge (10 qts) but waiting on finishing up my Pennzoil Platinums. Quite a long way to go.

I use 5w-30 Castrol Syntec in my Bimmer. Wonder what the difference is between it and the 'Edge' ?

I read that Syntec is not full synthetic. According to the posts on the Bimmerforum, few oils satisfy BMW requirements since they need to conform to European 'LongLife' standards if used in BMW. When I do not use BMW's oil, I use Mobil 1 (0w-40 preferred). It would appear - from what I have read - that Castrol Edge (available 5w-30 in the US) would satisfy the European durability requirements. It would seem that the oils that have "European formula" or something similar on the label also satisfy those requirements.

Thanks for all the input. I'll probably install it in both of my vehicles at the next oil change. Sounds good to me especially since I researched the test that was completed by a third party.

FYI, the only over the counter (non BMW dealer) Castrol motor oil's which pass the BMW LL spec are:
-0W30 (European formula) meets LL-01
-5W40 (European formula) meets LL-98

Castrol Edge 5W30 does not meet either LL spec.

You could potentially get away with an ACEA A3 oil (HTHS 3.5 or higher). For Castrol Syntec, that would be 0W30, 5W40, 10W40, 5W50 or 20W50. If under warranty, I would stick with 0W30 (LL-01).

Okay, I know this is a Lexus forum .. .:-)

Interesting - thank you!. I understand Mobil 1 0w40 satisfies the LL requirement too, but that their 5w30 does not. Further, it would seem that the sweet spot (i.e. 'best') in the life of an oil is approx. 1/2 way to its full life, since (simplistically explained) it contains too many additives early on, which wear down to optimum at 1/2 life, and then deplete little by little. There is some talk also about the quality/life of filters... Much of this may be overkill... how much harm can you do with a non LL synthetic oil with changes each year ,or 5K or 7.5K, which comes first?

If I have to pick 3 best oil brands for the RX: RX330,RX350,, I would absolutely pick Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Penzoil Ultra, and Amsoil. IMO they're the best oil on the market now for luxury and powered cars. You can choose to fill these types of oil: 0w30 or 5w30. 0w30, however, is often used in cars operating in extreme conditions (snow, storm, soft muddy ground, etc.)
I have Mobil 1 Extended Performance filled in the RX by myself and it is the best thing I've ever experienced. It makes my engine run so smooth. The manufacturer said to have it change every 15K miles but I am thinking to change it every 10K miles.

I thought the extended life (LL)-rated Mobil 1 was only 0w40, and that the 5w30 was not LL?

There's a 5w30 for Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Check with your local autopart stores or walmart?
