Default Oil burning what could be the cause?

I recently had a tune up done, and they changed the oil also.

yesterday I got on the highway and just felt to have a burst of speed.
I saw a yellow light cut on when i hit about 90 then I immediately slowed down untill it came off.

I checked the oil and it was half way done. I took it to my mechanic and he says its pretty dry under the car so the engine maybe burning oil.

so my question is what are the causes of burning oil? and how much could it possibly cost?

our engines don't really burn oil.

bet that your mech didn't fill it properly. don't believe me? fill it up with the right amount and drive it for a weekend, checking every day, shoouldnt go down.

nope he refilled it for me.
he asked if when I start up the car from resting over night if i see blue smoke, and if i do, it means im burning oil.
he said he knows for a fact he put about 5 or more quarts in there.

he said check the oil level in a few days.
this isnt the first time this happened. this happened prior to the oil change too.

My lexus takes 5 1/2 quarts and I use about 1/2 quart in 6,000 miles using mobil one it might burn a little since it is thin. I don't know about non synthetic oil never used it in my lexus since new.

i checked the oil today, monday was the last time they refilled a few extra quarts.
and the oil level is a little less than midway

my mech said also you can tell if it burns oil when you start the car from overnight and blue smoke is coming from the exhaust when you rev. I tried that today also, and a lot of blue stink smoke came from it....

aw man im so upset i had so many plans and spent so much money recently too so i dont have too much set aside for the car any more....

how much does it cost to fix these things?

very wierd, it's normally a VERY gradual thing to get oil blow by, i've never heard of it acting up suddenly on its own. Are they using the right weight oil?

this probably has been goin on for a while, because like i mentioned, like a month or so ago, i experienced seeing the low oil light when i hit about 85

most likely the oil was low before that trip
i have to admit, i wasnt checking the oil level regularly because I knew i was getting oil changes regularly and on time so i never checked the oil specifically

this seems like its going to cost a arm and a leg to fix,
Im getting laid off in about a month so i more or less need to focus on saving and not spending hundreds maybe thousands fixing my car.

this is one of those times i feel to just give in with the car. it seems like once I fix one problem, another arises.

sell the car??!?!?!? aww man is the problem really that bad that i should just sell it?
i just spend 1000+ last month on a timing belt water pump / tune up alone

got my cluster fixed also bought 98-00 chrome wheels and everything
got my sound system done the way I like it and a navigation system and everything.
AND the body is in GREAT shape. no rips black interior.
it was a gem when I found it.
to let it go would kill me

it sounds like a expensive fix..but if ur to keep the car then fix it up. but as u said, ur being laid off so it is ultimately your choice. fix it? or just fill up oil every week?

why not do it yourself?

it IS a hard job to change the rings.. but if you could have a mechanically inclined friend help out you may be able to do it.

go have your mech run a compression check across the cylinders, if you do have a mystery oil leak you best find out where it is.
