Default Won't shift from 3rd to 4th gear

So my sister got this car from my grandpa a while back (2 years ago) and she gave it to me when she went to college a while back (1 year ago) and i dont know much about cars or the history and maintenance this car has had. About a week ago the car would not shift from 3rd to 4th gear and would hit about 4k rpm. The CEL is on and i'm going to take it to autozone and the mechanic tomorrow because i need it for school and personal reasons asap. can anyone tell me what they think the problem is and what i should be expecting? Would be much appreciated.

It's common for the overdrive ("fourth gear") to lock out when the check engine light is on. Autozone will tell you what the codes are. If the car is running fine it's probably a fuel system issue. If it's running rough (misfiring) it's probably an electrical issue.

thanks.
would the O2 sensor have anything to do with it because like two months ago the CEL came on and i took it to my mechanic who said that it was the O2 sensor and that i should wait to see if it goes off and of course it did, but then the light came back on and then this problem started. just wondering if they were linked

Default Knock sensors

I lost overdrive 2 years ago and it was the knock sensors. Check your cel codes. Cost $1000 at Toyota dealership. Good luck!

rephrasing sktn77a ... certain CEL if they persist will lock out overdrive and O2 sensor will cause this.

Just as the mechanic said .. reset cel at least once before trying to fix the problem.

I too had the same problem. Had a mechanic tell me I needed a new transmission. Was getting the code for knock sensors. My husband replaced them and I haven't had a problem since. That was about six months ago. I bought my parts online through Toyota. After it was all said and done, it was roughly about $400 in parts.

Thanks for all your responses. I got the car checked out thursday and the guy at autozone said i had 10 codes . i took it to my mechanic and he confirmed it and told me that it was probably my sensors. He replaced 3 sensors, took it to get an emissions test, replaced my front brakes, and put $40 of gas in for $850. Everything runs smoothly and shifts when it needs to. Thanks for all your comments

Which sensors did the mechanic replace? O2? Knock? MAF? We're dying to know... (Well, maybe not dying).

Glad to hear it wasn't the typical tranny rebuild then still having problems.

sorry LA4MEAD i didn't ask him. My family has been going there for years for repairs and they've never had a problem or felt they got ripped off so my mom and i didn't bother to ask. I'll ask him Saturday cause i need to go to get my drivers side bulbs replaced.

Have the codes read with OBDII reader and have them reset and read them again on the first onset of the CEL.

Only your vehicle can tell you the problem it is detecting.

If you stop and restart your RX does it shift normal? Most likely your knock sensors are bad.
