For clarity, the seat settings get wiped out even without disconnecting the battery. In fact , I even cannot program them. From your remarks, it appears that the ECU is the culprit. Regardless of the cost, is the ECU easy to install or does it require extensive work. If I were to get a used one, would it work on my vehicle. Where is it located in vehicle.

I wish I had the schematic diagram. [there can be One master ecu or multiple ecus .. although I think there is one master ecu]. The darn thing has too much information, key transponder codes, odo etc. User Ebest settings and adaptive learning.
I have not accessed the ECU.

There should be only one according to the manual and it is located behind and on the left side of the glove compartment. You need to remove 4 screws each on the corner of the glove compartment after you open the compartment itself. THE ECU or ECM as it is called here is held there by 2 screws and one wiring harness.
About the only time I am ever going to touch that thing is when I hook up a Greddy eManage system in the not-to-distant future.
Tell you what. Will see today if I can take off the glove compartment and show everyone in a photo and not as hard as the upper part of the IACV valve

ok, the clock in my 99 RX300 is resetting every time i start the car... now i know the battery needs to be replaced, so im HOPING this will solve that problem (according to previous posts about the RX and low voltage problems 
) if not, i HOPE its not the ecu... but the seats didnt hold their memory 
but the radio did hold its presets 
... but if it is in fact the ecu, what does that mean in terms of things going wrong/not working??

seat memory and clock out
My case must be in the 0.01%. Here's a summary: My clock resets at 1:00 each time I start the car, the clock does not run, the seat memory function does not work. Help.

Go to local Sam's club or similar and purchase interstate battery model designed for the RX and install.
If it doesn't correct fix you can return it and the whole process is still cheaper than having dealer diagnose...
Man, I wish my problems were that simple.

We had previously eliminated poor/bad battery and were on the trail of a bad "EEPROM" in ecu.
If it is the ecu, it is $$$$ cost. One of those things, I would live with (being 80%+ driver on RX).

The point that needs to be made here is that as counter-intuitive as it may be, the battery may be sufficient to start the car but not sufficient to continously run the accessories like the clock and seat memory. At least that has been my experience. There appears to be some protective circuit built into the electronics that when it senses a marginal battery will shut off power to the non-essentials. Bottom line - put in a new battery and see what happens.
