Post [Q] Visor not staying up

The driver's side visor doesn't want to stay up against the roof. It droops down about 10-15 degrees. It's not in my vision, but it's a pain to keep pushing it up to the roof only to have it droop down again after 10 secs. of driving.

Anyone know the mechanism used to keep the visor tensioned? Or a workaround to make it stay against the roof?

Dealer says there's no adjustment to make and it needs to be replaced to the tune of $306.
If they're correct, I'll either live with it or, and it pains me to say it, I'll visit my local junk yard.

Anyone know if other Lexus models use the same visor?

There is no "fix" that I'm aware of, but you might take it apart and try . . . it can't get much worse. I seem to remember several posts here about this problem - on '99 and early '00 RX's. Replacement? The good news is while that visor is unique to the RX, any RX 300 visor should fit, and there were only two colors - grey and ivory - I think. A junkyard is probably your best bet. Before I'd spend the money for a new one, I'd try out a few shade-tree repairs, maybe something wedged into the fitting? Let us know what you find!

okay. i think that dealer is bs'ing you. on our '00 rx300 it was doing the same thing. would not stay up against the roof, or would stay up for only a few seconds. what you need to do is take a flathead screwdriver and carefully pry the plastic cover which is located at the place where the visor arm attaches to the roof (triangular piece of plastic). once this is removed, you will see one or two screws. tighten these up and your visor should be good as new.
let me know if this works!
good luck,
peter.

Petrie2001 - thanks for the info. I took a look and although the screws were slightly loose, it still droops. I actually took it apart. It looks like a stiff metal rod that's bent is inserted into the visor which is made of styrofoam. So if the styrofoam has worn a little at the bend point, it might be the cause.

I may try the velcro. Seems like the adhesive won't attach well to the carpet-like surface but won't know until I try.

I can't believe my Lexus has a styrofoam pressure fit for a visor I use multiple times a day on a car I want to keep 15 years. wow
I might buy a few up now so I can replace them later over the years.

same damn problem is happening to my wifes 99 RX300. We bought it, and put our cd visor holder (including cd's) on the visor, and it will just fall down. It wont hold up, so we said **** it and did not use our cd visor holder. They built that very poorly.

There has to be a fix for this, what can we shoot into the rod pressure area to increase the resistance? How about a long needle with some sort of styrofoam dissolving chemical that'll restore the resistance?

What does the 330 have for a visor mechanism?

Remember, I didn't fully look at the mechanism. There may be a screw for all I know. ;-)

But it's not easy to see much as the cloth exterior really can't be taken off. I removed the mirror mechanism, but that's the only cut-out of the cloth. So as best I can tell there's no way to pull off the cloth w/o ripping it which I don't want to do.

Perhaps the styrofoam is actually in pieces that can be taken apart, but w/o the schematic, it just isn't worth screwing it up.

I'll go the velcro route for now. Maybe I'll swing by the junk yard and see what I can find.

This sounds like a different issue, on mine tightening anything behind that triangular plate could only tighten the arm's rotational motion, not the tension on the visor itself that seems to derive only from some tensioning material in the visor itself. On mine, it seems to be very weak after only a few years.

Granted, this is a year old post, but I just picked up a 2000 RX 300 last week and my driver side visor does the same thing. My independant service station (which just checked it over today) gave me about the same info. Roughly $315 for parts and labor to replace it.

Party.
