I too have not figured out just how the drl's work for sure. The high beam fillament glow at 1/2 brightness. My guess is that for drl, the lamps make a series connection and for regular operation they are in parallel [all done by relays]. For this theory to hold, the bulbs must have a mechanism to isolate from chasis (gnd). How???

Yes, the DRL are in series and it is done with relays (several) to take care of the ground issue. The diagrams are available in the books. Here is what you need.
