I noticed there was rust on this engine part (see pic). Should I be concern and let the service people know? The car only has 1100,

Thanks

Hey mxh3901,

Since I do not own an RCF I do not know where that picture is in the engine bay, and I am unable to offer as good of an answer as some of the more knowledgable memebers. I just wanted to give you a bump up to the top with the hopes someone will see this an offer help.

I will add that it appears that the picture is of an engine belt and pulley. In my opinion that item should not be rusted, especially on a car as new as yours, but I do not know for sure. If you are unable to get a better answer than what I have offered I would suggest sending a few pictures to your service advisor to get his/her opinion. At least then you will know that you have covered your basis in the event that it is something that needs attention.

Either way please be sure to let us know how it works out so future members that have this same question can learn from this thread! Good luck, and BUMP!

Steel rusts instantly in high humidity environments, theres no way to prevent it. That's thick steel and surface rust is likely the most you'll see of it. If that really bothers you just a quick wipe with WD 40 will usually do the trick...don't spray it though...

We work with a lot of bare steel at our shop, it rusts as soon as the dew hits it overnight.

+1. It's nothing to be overly concerned with aside from being ugly. Most vehicles will have visual surface rust/oxidation on suspension bolts, nuts, and small engine parts (esp. if you're looking at Japanese or American branded vehicles). My car rarely sees rain and is garage kept all the time, but still shows signs of surface oxidation underneath. Moisture is there even if you can't see it.

Don't expect the dealer to say anything outside of "it's normal." Obviously rust can cause part failures but those issues are normally found by the manufacturer beforehand and recalled as needed.

As others have said, its carbon steel, its going to corrode.

If its annoys you, sand the corrosion off and paint it black.

The rust of those pulleys is caused by the water that drips through the vent in the hood. I applied a solution for the issue about a 2 years ago now and have not seen rust since. Basically you have to redirect the water to the front of the radiator and issue solved.

I believe that's part of the water pump flange and it is bare metal. I painted mine

True.. the other issue is that the grooved belt pulley also will rust just from the water contact and that one is harder to correct. Don't know why a Lexus overlooked this design flaw. I had to manufacture a plastic water redirector to correct and prevent future occurrences.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, I also saw this. I'll try to get pictures later.

Not as much as the OP but it is somewhat in the starting phase on the driver side water pump flange. Also found a small patch of surface rust on one of the the metal pipes that run above it, as said by folks I think it is caused by the hood vent drain, Some suggested to re-direct the drain, any tips on how can I do that, also any suggestion on how to clean the surface rust is it possible ? Not sure if I can paint it myself.

My car brake rotors are also rusted which can be cleaned once we drive and use brakes but the inside hub as well it's having rust due to the vehicle sitting for a while without being driven.. I think it's unavoidable for any vehicle once it leaves factory due to the environmental conditions for some parts.

This is what was made to address the redirection of the water that drips through the hood. It's been about 4 years now without any issue and no rusting of the pulleys or components anymore.
