I just installed a new K & N filter for the SRT w/ race ecu kit and a CAB. After resetting the ECU, I made two runs and after each run my engine died!! <--- That was at 3:30pm. I decided to let the engine cool down and check all the connections and everything loiks secure, so I did another 2 runs and everything was fine. The only difference is that I had my headlights on.
During all this time, I watched my tach bounce from 400rpm to 600rpm at a standstill. I can see that the ECU is compensating for the low idle. However, when I parked the car the idle is pinned at 1K and the slowly inches down to 650rpm. IS this normal after an intake installation??
On a side note, I've been lucky and never had a low idle problem before the mod. I have a 99 GS400 w/ 39K on the dial. Anyone else have the same experience???
Is the entire intake installation new or just the filter? What CAB did you use?
I'd recommend checking how secure the filter is... if it's loose it could cause those symptoms.
Might want to make sure you put the MAS back on the right way as well, although the car usually doesn't start when you get it on upside down (not that I'd know anything about that ).
I double checked everything, I looked at the MAF and it looks clean (no oil) and facing the right direction
Is is possible the filter is allowing to much air or that the CAB is effecting the back pressure when you get off the throttle???
I would eliminate the CAB, since I have it but with the filter that came with the air intake. I would look at the filter as being the cause. If you still have the old filter put it back on and see what happens. If the same thing occurs then at least the air filter can be eliminated as the cause of the problem. Good luck.

Ditto - the only time I've ever had my GS die on me was when I had my 'original' SRT filter come loose and slip nearly off, allowing too much air into the intake. Pulled over, reattached, and I was on my way.

Yep - I think so. Or the filter and CAB are fighting one another. Remember the flow for the SRT intake was engineered to be used w/o a CAB and a specific filter.

I agree with Canaan here 100%. I've also got Kaju's CAB and have had no problems, but I'm using the SRT-specified air filter. Put the old air filter back on (keeping the CAB) and see if that works.
If the new filter is letting in too much air it just might be causing the issue.
Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to reinstall the other filter tonight. I made a few more runs today and no engine stalls, so I'm leaning towards a ECU software/learning issue. The idle at park has dropped to 900rpm, but still kinda high. I guess it's tral and error time
While we're on the subject of SRT, what RPM does your car shift at?? Mine is shfting at 5900 with the race ECU?? Will these mysteries ever end Thanks again.
To my knowledge, the race ECU has nothing to do with the transmission shift points. It only modifys the fuel mixture. If you want it to shift at higher RPMs, do it manually. When you stomp on it in 1st gear shift at about 5200 and it will run over 6000 RPM before shifting. In 2nd gear and higher you can shift just before the actual desired RPM becasue the valve body in the transmission reacts quicker.
The filter change looks like it did the trick, I didn't think the marginal amount of air flw would make a difference, boy was I ever wrong Now I'm worried abut excess dirt that may accumulate on the filter over time and reducing the airflw. The SRT ECU must be running on a very thin line...thanks again for everyone's help.

I wouldn't think the ECU wuld effect the shift points either, I've been keeping the car in auto for testing reasons, atleast I can elimimate human error First gear shifts right around 5700 then the consecutive gears hit around 5900 or so. I'll go see if I can hunt down some takers tonight with the e-shift.

Dave,
Glad to hear you are up and running with a smooth idle and no dying engine. Enjoy!
Don't worry about the air filter getting dirty. I ahve had mine for about 7K miles and haven't touched it.
It isn't the SRT that operates on a slim margin, it the the GS engine with VVTi that is VERY SENSITIVE.
The engine is too smart for it's own good.
