Default Check Engine Light On - First Place to Look?

My CEL has come on. Previously I was told by dealer that the gas cap is usual culprit by not being on tight (several clicks). In the past this has done the trick, but now it is on and doesn't seem to be going away regardless of gas cap tightness. Could it need a new cap altogether? Just got back from a round trip 800 mile drive across the desert (Phoenix to L.A.) and the light was on the whole time before I even started out. Didn't have any problems or unusual noises along the way and car sailed at 90 mph like a dream.

Any thoughts on where to look first when the light comes on?

Thanks.

Yes...but you need to get the code read. Most autoparts stores can read it. Took mine in and the Dealer charged me $90 for a dislodged breather hose. Poke around in engine bay and look for any suspect hoses. GL

just start changing parts......or stop by your local part store to have the code read.

First thing's first buddy... You need to know what code it is to start off... Just go to strauss or autozone and let them pull the code for you, write it down and then do some research... Then you can go from there... It may be something minor... Good luck and keep us posted...

Since you already tried the gas cap trick and it didn't work, like everyone else is saying, get the code read and go from there, but don't take it to the dealer, go to Autozone like others have said.

I got an engine light for first time since first day of ownership. I scanned the code at advanced auto parts and it came up P0430 bank 2. The exhaust gasket is leaking so im going to replace that soon because i just spent some greens to get powersteering fixed on my dodge ram.

Here is a question, Is it pain in *** to get taht replaced or easy to do if i have all tools?

On second thought, if its what I think it is (you referred to gas cap), it could be that, vsv valve or worse case scenario the charcoal canister... p0440, 441 and 446 are the codes... Good luck... PM me if you need additional info...

They most likely didn't b/c you had other service performed by them. I was told that they will reimburse me to pull the code if I get the related issued fixed.

So I just took a can of sprite and went to autozone.

Sprite?!

My light came on as well. Has been on for three days now. I don't know if the car is behaving differently because of the light, or if i *think* that its doing it because i know the light is on. I drove to Jersey, two miles of no traffic highway and took it to mid 80's and nothing unusual. I think i do need an ailgnment. Based on the recommendations here, i WILL NOT go to teh dealer and instead stop by autozone tomorrow morning, come back here to see if its a code that has been posted, then phone my mechanic and have the part ready to be replaced.

Hopefully is nothing serious. I dropped too much money this month...
