Question Project - SRT Heat Shield Upgrade

Some of the CL member here has custom build the Cold Air Intake Box to enclosed the CONE. SRT comes with a heat sheild that does some decent job, but not enough.

My thought was to utilizing the existing SRT heat shield and make it better. ie.. add some heat shielding material to the inside of the SRT heat shield. Add some round pipe heat forms to to the top and closed in gaps on side.

Can anyone suggest thin heat sheilding material for the side walls?

Also, does the pipe heat sheild material (home depot) good enough to shield out some engine heat and not melting?

Thanks

Cool

Shinchan:

I posted some times ago on some materials to shield heat. Check the following threads.

Default 3/8" Fiber Tech insulation

Shinchan – From my experience, insulating the SRT shield by itself is a waste of time. There’s one collecting dust in my garage right now. I glued 3/8” Fiber Tech insulation to both the side and back of the SRT shield and it accomplished nothing. Did it insulate from heat better? Probably did, but didn’t reduce the noise enough to notice. There is apparently too much gap (space) between the SRT sides and the hood insulation. I know the shield doesn’t touch the under-hood insulation. You do need a top of some sort. When I used the same insulation on the inside of the Weapon R closed box – it made a noticeable difference. That’s been my experience. The insulation came from J.C. Whitney and was about $26-27.00 plus another 3-5 bucks for the insulation adhesive.

My .35 cents worth.

I admire all of your innovative notions, but be careful as to what you place inside of the SRT heatshield, as if you disrupt or affect airflow in any way it could have adverse outcomes due to the mass air flow readings.

Remember the SRT HIFIS was carefully designed prior to being released.

Default C'mon Marken

Marken - thanks for the advice, but I think you can see that I didn't do anything to negatively impact the performance of the shield. Anyway, I thought I'd post a couple pics of the attempt I made.

This is the inside, where you can see the
Fiber Tech insulation.

Hey Garnet good lining! Is that TRD duct tape or the JDM cloth variety?

Default High performance tape

Now Dave, you know that no self-respecting CL’er would use anything but TRD or L-Tuned duct tape – this is their #505 “Race” tape, worth 3hp and 4 ft lbs (I could feel the difference).
