I try to reach the tire max PSI. I just inflated today to 45-48 PSI. I have lead foot so...more fun for me!

and then when you hit a nice big speed bump or similar your tires will just blow out on you and that lead foot of yours will do nothing for you

there's a reason there are suggested tire pressures. a few psi i can understand, but you do realize that you're between 15-18 psi over stock recommendation.

that's 1.5 times the pressure, meaning 1.5 times less absorption of road geography. think about it.

So what's the final result then? I've been running my tires at about 38 psi ever since I read this thread, does everyone agree this is the best tire pressure? would 40 be better? 36?

i would say 34-35 the max on cold "oem" rims/tires... once it warms up your tires are reading 40 or higher. just need to make sure every1 checks their pressure while its cold.

1 mile drive = tires are warm anything under is considered "cold" readings still.

I really don't know how this worked out but I get about 8MPG (mostly city driving) and I went on a road trip this weekend to indiana (300 or so miles away) and on the highway with the windows down, cruise control most of the way, I was averaging 26MPG and it was crazy, Then I drove back here and then some on one tank. especially gas being 2.89 for BP Ultimate (No Ethanol ), I felt like I was in heaven haha... I stopped at almost every BP on the way home just to fill up with the 0% ethanol gas, and it was much cheaper... Could the no ethanol make a difference, or was it just that the constant speed that helped the MPG (or maybe both) just happy that the V8 was pulling numbers like that...

Yea I meant I was at that psi reading cold ... And I have the stock 16" rims but not tires, my tires are bridgestone potenza RE050, and they are rated at 52 psi max cold, so i used to run them at 40 but someone told me that was bad, if it's bad then why would the tires have that 52 psi max cold on them?

Tires go into the engineering of the car's overall suspension system. If you increase the pressure of the tire you increase the "spring rate" meaning other components are absorbing more impact.
As far as blow-outs go, if your tires are less than a year old and have at least 50% tread, I seriously doubt they would fail if you run close to the max pressure. That pressure has to have some safety factor engineered into it to address concern with liability for the tire manufacturer

A bit of a trade-off, save money on gas now, spend it later on struts.

dude, if you're getting 8mpg even with the v8, you either need some serious maintenance or serious driving lessons.....

my ML430 with my heavy *** foot even got 14-16, and thats with a 4.3 and full time all wheel drive

I have a general question about MPG.

I have a stock '01 GS 300.

Stock suspension (except for Bilstein Sport Shocks) stock 16 wheels and OEM size tires 215/60-16.

The best millage I ever got was driving non-stop on I5 from LA to San Jose - 23MPG.
Around town with a bit of freeway driving I get about 17MPG.

Is this as good as it gets?

Well, I do mostly (I guess around 70% or so) local driving and with my mods and heavy foot (at times ) I get around 14-16mpg. We ONLY have ethanol-infused gas here in NY. The gas SUCKS the big one! It's more expensive and doesn't burn as efficiently. The gov't really screwed us on this...the only reason why they did this is to keep the gas prices relatively stable but without giving the consumer pure gas...now (well, it's been several years now) it is a mix between gasonline and ethanol. So, this move allowed oil companies to make an even greater profit margin! lol...gotta love it.
